The Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, met yesterday with Tiémoko Meyliet Koné, Vice President of Côte d’Ivoire, in Abidjan, to discuss shared priorities related to bilateral trade, economic partnership, sustainable development and regional peace and stability in West Africa.
Minister Anand extended her congratulations ahead of Côte d’Ivoire’s 66th Independence Day celebrations and underscored the importance Canada places on the two countries’ long-standing and multifaceted partnership. She emphasized Canada’s commitment to deepening the partnership, which is built on mutual economic interests, democratic values and a shared vision for inclusive growth.
They also exchanged views on pressing regional and geopolitical challenges, including peacebuilding, security cooperation, democratic resilience in West Africa and the Sahel region and opportunities to support Côte d’Ivoire’s National Development Plan 2026 to 2030 through partnerships that leverage Canadian expertise, technology and investment. Minister Anand reaffirmed the role of Canada’s Africa Strategy to foster greater economic cooperation, strengthen peace and security partnerships, enhance engagement of African diaspora communities, and pursue international assistance investments that support economic development and youth employment.
Minister Anand highlighted Canada’s ongoing support for locally led security and stability initiatives, including Canada’s renewed support for the International Academy for Counter-Terrorism, as well as joint efforts to advance human rights, gender equality and economic opportunities for women and youths.
Minister Anand concluded their meeting by reaffirming Canada’s strong friendship with Côte d’Ivoire and emphasizing the two countries’ shared dedication to fostering long-term prosperity and security across Africa.
