The Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, State of Qatar, on the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York City, New York.
Minister Anand reiterated Canada’s solidarity with Qatar and other Gulf partners in response to attacks from Iran and its proxy groups in the region. She thanked Qatar for its ongoing diplomatic efforts to support the de-escalation of tensions in the Middle East. Minister Anand reiterated Canada’s support for the safe passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, and the Red Sea. She stressed that Canada will continue to work with regional partners in support of freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and maritime security in the region. They also discussed the catastrophic humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the deteriorating situation in the West Bank.
Minister Anand welcomed the continued strengthening of Canada-Qatar relations, including recent agreements to deepen economic, investment and security cooperation through a Strategic Dialogue. She thanked Prime Minister Al Thani for Qatar’s participation in the Canada Investment Summit 2026, which was held on September 14 and 15 in Toronto, Ontario. The summit, hosted by Prime Minister Mark Carney, provided an opportunity to promote investment in Canada, connect Canadian businesses with Qatari investors and identify new areas for cooperation.
Minister Anand and Prime Minister Al Thani agreed to remain in close contact.
