American Airlines is the world’s largest operator in multiple ways, including for the number of flights. But it does not rank first globally for the number of destinations served. In Q3 2026 (July-September), the oneworld member will fly to a considerable 361 airports globally. Only the network of United Airlines is larger (375 airports).

All airlines have route and airport churn, and American is no exception. Using the carrier’s schedule submission to Cirium Diio to compare its network in Q3 2025 with what’s available in Q3 2026 shows that only Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH) is no longer served. However, 12 airports inside and outside the US have been added, whether they’re brand-new to American’s network or have simply returned.

American Has Added These Six US Airports

Cirium indicates that 234 of American’s 361 airports (65%) are within the US and US territories in the Caribbean. They include six additional markets, each of which is shown below. Four of them have been served before, even if that was 34 years ago. The US Department of Transportation (DOT) indicates that Lewisburg last saw American in 1992. The source shows that the carrier deployed the Boeing 727 from the airline’s then Raleigh–Durham International Airport (RDU) hub.

It is especially good to see Staunton/Waynesboro and Vero Beach, which are brand-new to the airline’s network. The jets of American and its regional unit, American Eagle, will now be seen in eight airports in Virginia and 17 in Florida. Influenced by American’s Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) and Miami International Airport (MIA) hubs, the carrier will now fly to more airports in those states than any other operator.

These Six International Destinations Are Now Served

American will fly to 127 destinations beyond the US in Q3 2026 (excluding airports in US territories), accounting for 35% of the airline’s network. Compared to July-September 2025, five additional airports are now served. Six have been added, but DOH has been removed. American replaced close partner Qatar Airways between PHL and DOH in October 2023 and operated until March 2026. Qatar Airways returns next month.

Several of the additions are notable for different reasons. For example, the arrival of American Eagle in Puerto Escondido means that the coastal destination in Mexico has two US carriers and routes for the first time, joining United Express from Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). At just 56 nautical miles (104 km), MIA to Bimini is American’s shortest international link. American is the sole US airline in the Hungarian capital, while the Czech capital has two US carriers for the first time in seven years.

American Is Back In Venezuela

Largely due to American’s MIA hub, the carrier is by far the leading US operator to South America. In Q3 2026, it’ll fly to eight nations across the vast continent: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, and now Venezuela (Uruguay is only served during the winter).

Due to the better relationship between the US and Venezuela and improved safety and security, American has finally returned. Up to three daily services exist, albeit primarily on regional jets. Focusing on Q3, American last had Venezuela flights in that period in 2018, when three daily services existed.

While the E175 is now mainly deployed, the Boeing 737-800 and 757-200 were used in Q3 2018. In the last 22 years, Cirium shows that up to nine daily services were available, when the Airbus A300, 737-800 and 757-200 were flown. The 767-300 was also deployed at times. American has since retired the A300, 757, and 767.
