The early days of October saw an uptick in registrations from the energy sector in the federal lobbying registry.
The Canadian Nuclear Association, under the tag “Aboriginal Affairs,” did some advocacy on “support for Canada’s nuclear industry,” as described broadly in the filing. This comes as talks have broken down between Kebaowek First Nation and Canadian Nuclear Laboratories for a proposed nuclear waste disposal site near Chalk River. The case marks the first time a federal court has weighed in on the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission’s role in enforcing the federal government’s Free, Prior and Informed Consent legislation in the context of a major projects approval.
It also comes as the commission spent the week in hearings for the renewal of the operating licence for the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station, where Hiawatha First Nation expressed concerns about Bill C-39 and its implication for the Crown’s duty to consult.
In a semi-related filing, the propane association did some lobbying to promote the use of the fuel in First Nation communities. It also had discussions with the government about the effect of possible rail strikes on the energy sector.
Imperial Oil lobbyists were also in town to talk about carbon capture and emissions reduction targets.
