A Delta Air Lines passenger has gone viral after commandeering a gate intercom to vent his frustration about a lack of airline staff during a rough weekend for the Atlanta-based carrier. The man repeatedly called for assistance at the unstaffed gate, at one point inquiring, “Delta, Delta, is anybody working?”

The incident occurred at Gate 30B in Terminal 3 at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), which saw more than 600 delayed flights on May 2–3. However, it was Delta’s Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) hub that bore the brunt of its weekend operational meltdown, registering almost 300 cancellations across Friday and Saturday.

The clip posted by TikTok user marilyndelgado has already logged over 200,000 likes — in the video (see below), the man is seen speaking directly into the microphone normally reserved for gate agents, pleading for a member of airline staff to assist him. The gate waiting area was relatively empty at the time, suggesting the flight was not nearing its boarding time, but could have been one of the hundreds of delayed flights at LAX this weekend.

The incident occurred during a challenging period for Delta, which has made over 400 flight cancellations this weekend and counting. The carrier has cited “crew restrictions” as the reason behind its operational troubles. Delta is the busiest airline at LAX with a market share of over 18%, flying to almost 60 destinations with both its mainline and regional fleet. The carrier has faced notable staffing challenges in recent months, although this has primarily been with pilots, not ground agents. The Delta passenger said over the intercom,

“Hi, Delta associates that aren’t paying attention. Please come to 30B. You have a customer waiting.”

Delta Stumbles Over Difficult Weekend

According to The Travel, Delta passengers have begun to notice a concerning trend this year, with cancellations and delays creeping well above the airline’s usual reliable rate. This hasn’t just affected its flights, with many travelers also reporting longer lines at Delta Sky Clubs in recent months.

Delta has been suffering from notable pilot scheduling and availability issues, leading to cancellations due to pilot shortages rising tenfold year-on-year. More than one-third of Delta’s cancellations are now due to pilot staffing issues, and its on-time performance (OTP) has dipped as a result, dropping from 86% in March 2025 to 79% in March 2026.

Having placed first in the country for reliability in the past five consecutive years, the latest Department of Transportation (DOT) data puts Delta in sixth position. What Passengers Should Do If Their Delta Flight Is Canceled

Under DOT rules, if your flight is canceled or significantly changed (more than three hours), you are entitled to a full automatic refund, although airlines often offer rebooking or vouchers first. Airlines may give out meal vouchers during long delays and cover hotel accommodations for any passengers stranded overnight, although policies vary from airline to airline. Passengers should proactively request vouchers at the gate, as they are not always distributed automatically.

An important caveat is that Delta is only liable if the cancellations or delays are due to issues within its control. Unlike weather events, air traffic control (ATC) or security shortages, its own staffing shortages are classified as controllable events.

The outlook for Delta is uncertain going into Sunday, with FlightAware data showing almost 70 cancellations as of 04:00 AM ET, and this number is likely to rise. Passengers with upcoming Delta flights are advised to check flight status frequently via the Delta Fly app, as many cancellations are being announced at short notice.
