Inside United’s Massive Starlink Blitz To Retrofit 20+ Mainline Aircraft Per Week, 1,000 By 2027

United Airlines is dramatically accelerating its Starlink rollout, now targeting more than 1,000 mainline aircraft equipped with the high-speed satellite internet service by May 2027, as reported by the View From The Wing. The ambitious plan would require installations on more than 20 aircraft every week across a network of 17 maintenance stations. This acceleration comes as United increasingly positions connectivity as a competitive weapon against rivals, particularly Delta Air Lines, whose Amazon satellite internet rollout is not scheduled to begin until 2028. United’s goal is to make fast, free Wi-Fi a much more consistent part of the passenger experience across its enormous mainline fleet.

The project is significant because United is not starting from scratch. The airline has already equipped hundreds of aircraft, including virtually its entire dual-cabin United Express regional fleet, while mainline installations have accelerated throughout 2026. In July, United said more than 450 aircraft already had Starlink and that it expected to equip nearly 1,000 aircraft by the end of the year.

The latest target represents a substantial acceleration from United’s earlier plans. In June 2026, the airline targeted nearly 1,000 aircraft with Starlink by the end of the year, combining mainline and regional aircraft, and expected roughly 60 widebodies to receive the system during 2026.

That pace will depend on United distributing the work across 17 installation locations. Spreading installations geographically allows United to work on aircraft during scheduled maintenance opportunities while reducing the time individual aircraft must be removed from service.

United’s own second-quarter results demonstrate why the airline is pushing so hard. The carrier reported that Starlink-equipped flights generated Wi-Fi satisfaction scores more than twice as high as aircraft using other onboard connectivity systems.

The Wi-Fi Race Is Becoming A Loyalty Battle

United’s Starlink push is about more than simply improving the onboard experience. The airline is actively using its connectivity advantage to attract customers from competitors, with Delta frequent flyers among the most obvious targets, as noted by Business Insider. United has also promoted a “Switch To Better Wi-Fi” offer allowing eligible customers with Delta or American status to receive a temporary United status match, potentially reaching Premier 1K level.

The marketing message is unusually direct: United is effectively asking travelers to reconsider where their loyalty lies by highlighting the difference between its existing Starlink network and competitors’ future connectivity plans. United was already using social media to target customers discussing Delta’s Wi-Fi, promoting its faster onboard internet as a reason to switch.

The timing gives United a potentially valuable window. Delta has selected Amazon’s satellite connectivity technology for a future rollout, but its deployment is not expected to begin until 2028 and will initially cover around 500 aircraft. American Airlines, meanwhile, has announced Starlink for more than 500 Airbus aircraft beginning in 2027, while Southwest and Alaska are also moving ahead with their own Starlink programs.

A Massive Operation With A Bigger Competitive Goal

The sheer size of United’s installation campaign is becoming visible in real-world fleet tracking. The independent United Starlink Tracker currently lists 617 of 1,675 United aircraft as equipped, including 265 mainline aircraft and 352 United Express aircraft. That means mainline Starlink penetration remains relatively low today, making the planned acceleration to more than 1,000 mainline aircraft in just several months particularly aggressive.

For passengers, the difference will come down to whether the aircraft operating a particular flight has been retrofitted. United’s regional fleet is already much further ahead, while the mainline rollout is now the central focus. The airline’s first Starlink-equipped widebody entered transatlantic service in June 2026, and United has said it expects to equip its entire widebody fleet next year.

United is betting that reliable, high-speed Wi-Fi can influence where customers choose to fly, particularly business travelers and frequent flyers who value the ability to work, stream and remain connected throughout a journey. Starlink is becoming a crucial part of United’s broader strategy to strengthen its product and win brand-loyal customers. If the airline maintains a pace of more than 20 mainline installations every week, its May 2027 target could transform Starlink from a common feature into a defining characteristic of the United fleet.
