Injustice 3 will feature one character fans will expect and one who perhaps comes as a surprise, according to a fresh leak.
MP1st unearthed evidence to suggest the unannounced fighting game will feature both Supergirl and Batwoman on its roster of playable characters. Supergirl comes as no surprise, given her starring role in the nine-year-old Injustice 2. But Batwoman’s inclusion — assuming it’s true — would mark the debut for the character in the mainline Injustice games.
Batwoman (Kate Kane) dies in the canon Injustice comics, which suggests someone else has taken up the Batwoman mantle for Injustice 3, Kate Kane didn’t actually die, or the game retcons the events of the book. Either way, this is a superhero story we’re talking about — no-one stays dead forever.
Or, as MP1st suggests, Injustice 3 may not continue the story told in Injustice and Injustice 2, but act as a reboot that tells an entirely different story. NetherRealm’s other fighting game franchise, Mortal Kombat, has done this multiple times, so it wouldn’t be a huge surprise with Injustice since it’s been nearly a decade since Injustice 2 came out.
Publisher Warner Bros. has yet to announce another Injustice game, despite it being an open secret at this point. Given Paramount looks like it’s finally going to get the green light to complete its $110 billion merger with Warner Bros., perhaps that will provide some clarity on the company’s video game plan, which we know also include Hogwarts Legacy 2 and a new Batman game from Arkham developer Rocksteady.
My guess is Injustice 3 — or whatever it’s called — is announced at The Game Awards in December, with a release set for in or around April 2027.
In May, NetherRealm development chief Ed Boon said another Mortal Kombat game was in development, which again, didn’t come as much of a surprise. Confirmation of another Mortal Kombat game came after 2023’s Mortal Kombat 1 sold 8 million copies, just over half Mortal Kombat 11’s total of 15 million copies sold, as of 2022. Perhaps this new Mortal Kombat game will be released after Injustice 3.
The first game in the series, Injustice: Gods Among Us, launched in 2013, with its sequel, Injustice 2, coming out in 2017. NetherRealm released Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019 and for a time it seemed like the studio would alternate between Mortal Kombat and Injustice games, but it went on to release another Mortal Kombat, the soft reboot that is Mortal Kombat 1, in 2023 instead.
