How Many Hours Can The Airbus A350-900 Fly Without Refueling?


The A350-900 is currently the most advanced widebody aircraft produced by Europe’s colossal aerospace manufacturer, Airbus. The jet was crafted in direct response to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which is also made primarily from composite materials. The exceptionally low weight of these jets compared to their predecessors has made them extremely fuel-efficient and also given them a greater range than legacy widebodies.

The A350-900, specifically, has a unique variant that is known as the ultra-long range, or A350-900ULR. These aircraft fly some of the longest commercial routes in history for Singapore Airlines, connecting the capital of Singapore to New York City in the United States. These flights last between 18 and 19 hours, which is only tolerable thanks to the advanced interior design of the A350’s cabin as well.

Singapore Airlines previously flew to Newark Airport (EWR), which was forced to cancel in 2013 due to the rising fuel cost and inefficiency of the A340 quadjet that it used at the time. With the release of the A350-900ULR, the airline was able to restart nonstop service from Singapore Changi (SIN) to New York JFK Airport (JFK) in 2018. Singapore went even further with its modifications to the already long-range Airbus jet, adding more fuel tanks and reducing cargo space as well as passenger rows.

These flights (SQ21/SQ23) take around 18-19 hours and require four pilots operating in shifts. Singapore flies 28 times per month to JFK, and also offers 28 round-trip flights per month between Singapore and Newark Airport, with each route offering 4,508 seats available for booking. There is a minor difference in range between the two itineraries: SIN to JFK is 9,487 miles, while SIN to EWR is 9,484 miles.

The ULR aircraft sacrifices capacity for increased fuel tanks, which also means that it’s a more comfortable experience for flyers because the aircraft is configured in a ‘premium heavy’ layout. Passengers benefit from a quieter cabin, higher humidity levels, and lower cabin altitude to reduce jet lag. Meals are served at flexible times, and the premium seats convert into lie-flat beds for easier sleep on the marathon journey.

This air bridge from Asia to North America pushes the aircraft to its extreme limit, and technically is beyond what a standard A350-900 can actually fly when it rolls off the factory line. Over 70% of the airframe is built from advanced materials, including 53% carbon-fiber composites and titanium. Even the conventional A350 is capable of impressive distances thanks to advanced materials as well as refined aerodynamics and far more efficient power plants made by Rolls-Royce.

China Southern’s Longest Long-Haul

The longest itinerary available on a standard A350-900 is operated by China Southern from Shenzhen International Airport (SZX) to Mexico City International (MEX) and reduces the overall travel time compared to previous flight plans, which included stopovers, by nearly half. Launched in 2024, this is the first direct passenger service to Latin America from the mainland of China. Owing to the fact that take off from Mexico City is under ‘hot and high’ conditions that limit performance, a stopover on the way to China is typically required for the return leg.

This service is currently the longest nonstop international passenger route operated by any Chinese airline, a record previously held by China Southern’s Guangzhou-New York City route. China Southern was the first Chinese carrier to operate flights to Mexico when it launched a Guangzhou-Vancouver-Mexico City route in April 2017. Before the pandemic, several airlines, including China Southern, Aeromexico, and Hainan Airlines, operated routes between the two countries, but these were largely suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Data from Cirium, an aviation analytics company, shows that the airline offers three round-trip flights per week for a total of 12 a month on this 8,778-mile route. China Southern uses a standard 3-class configuration. The onboard service has been highly praised for its attentiveness and impressive catering. Passengers are served multi-course meals featuring both Chinese and Western-style options. In business class, meals are often served in up to seven courses on fine china.

Delta Air Lines operates two distinct flagship routes from its hub at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) to South Africa, serving both Johannesburg (JNB) and Cape Town (CPT). Schedule information from Cirium shows that the airline provides 20 round-trip flights per month along both routes, with over 5,500 seats between each city pair. Johannesburg is the further destination at 8,433 miles, while Cape Town is 8,127 miles.

Both routes are exclusively operated by the Airbus A350-900, which features a four-class configuration. The aircraft features 32 Delta 1 suites with privacy provided by full-height doors in 121 staggered rows that provide ‘all aisle access.’ Meanwhile, Delta Premium Select is a 48-seat cabin with generous legroom, deep recline, and an adjustable footrest for each traveler. Delta Comfort is a 36-seat cabin section with extra legroom, and there are 190 seats in the Main Cabin, standard economy.

The A350-900 replaced the Boeing 777 to serve the Delta international network, including its longest-haul connections from Atlanta to South Africa. Similar to the China Southern route between Shenzhen and Mexico, the return leg on the Delta route requires extra fuel because Johannesburg is a hot and high operating environment. Cape Town provides the extra fuel to allow the A350 to make the long journey across the Atlantic Ocean back to Atlanta.

Cathay Pacific’s A350 Fleet

Cathay Pacific deploys the A350-900 as a complementary platform to its larger Boeing 777-300ER fleet. One of the most important routes that these aircraft serve is Hong Kong (HKG) to New York JFK, with A350s also serving Toronto International (YYZ) to provide direct travel options between China and North America. The exceptional efficiency of the A350 has allowed Cathay Pacific to maintain year-round service when there is lower traffic, thanks to the lower passenger count required to maintain profitable operations in the A350 by comparison to the 777.

The A350-900 offers a range of approximately 8,100 nautical miles while carrying from 280 to 325 passengers. This route nearly reaches that exact limit at 8,070 miles. This ‘sweet spot’ allows Cathay Pacific to fly routes that are too long for smaller jets. The A350’s adaptive wings can change shape during flight to optimize the wing profile, reducing drag and further stretching the aircraft’s range and performance regardless of seasonal weather patterns like strong winter headwinds over the Pacific.

The airline flies 12 times per month, with 3,360 seats available combined. Vietnam Airlines maintains its nonstop service between Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) and San Francisco (SFO), a route covering roughly 7,837 miles, by leveraging the technical capabilities of the Airbus A350-900. Vietnam Airlines carefully manages its payload in order to make it possible to serve this direct trans-Pacific air bridge. Many flights leave the gate with empty seats to ensure the plane has enough fuel for the entire journey across the vast expanse of remote ocean.

Vietnam Airlines operated this route with a stopover in Alaska during the COVID-19 pandemic, flying Boeing 787-10 Dreamliners. In 2021, the transition to the Airbus A350-900 made it possible to maintain regularly scheduled nonstop service. The ‘airspace’ cabin of this Airbus A350 is organized into a three-class configuration with 29 business class seats and up to 45 premium economy seats, with a maximum of 240 in economy class. Schedule data from Cirium shows that the airline offers 16 flights per month with just under 5,000 seats available.

In addition to the advanced aerodynamic and engine design allowing the plane to fly long distances while using the lowest amount of fuel possible, those advanced engineering principles and composite materials help make the flying experience better for passengers. Advanced engine acoustic liners and aerodynamic shaping make the A350 the quietest twin-aisle aircraft in the world, reducing passenger fatigue over 17 hours.

Air France flies an impressive 7,239-mile route between Paris’s Charles de Gaulle Airport and Santiago (SCL) in Chile. This route is a vital link for European-South American trade. It was previously operated by the Boeing 777, but the A350-900’s superior fuel economics on thin long-haul routes made it the perfect replacement. The A350s used for this route feature a new cabin design with 292 seats across three classes. Sliding doors in business class offer some of the most private seats on any plane in service, while the catering is especially renowned for exceptional cuisine and wine selection.

Air India uses the A350 on a similar mission to Singapore Airlines, providing service from New Delhi (DEL) to JFK and Newark in the US. Transitioning from older Boeing 777s, the introduction of the A350-900 was a massive hardware upgrade intended to entice premium business travelers. The aircraft has a three-class configuration with 316 total seats, with the latest-generation in-flight entertainment available at every seat, and meal services feature new chinaware, glassware, and cutlery featuring India-inspired designs.

Sichuan Airlines flies from Chengdu Airport (TFU) to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on the West Coast of the United States, offering one of the longest direct services across the Pacific Ocean. The A350-900 has been a game-changer for this route, compared to previous aircraft types like the Boeing 777 or A330s. Sichuan Airlines’ A350 is configured for 331-337 passengers across business and economy classes. The A350 cabin is widely regarded as one of the most comfortable long-haul environments available.
