Here’s the first trailer for Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie

The first trailer for the Resident Evil movie, from Weapons director Zach Cregger, is here, and so far it doesn’t seem to be all that Resident Evil.

Cregger is the latest to be tackling a Resident Evil movie adaptation, and if this trailer is anything to go by it looks very much like a horror film in the director’s style, rather than a straight forward video game adaptation of Capcom’s series. Though given the previous attempts, this is probably no bad thing.

Rather than being inundated with known Resident Evil mutations such as lickers or the surprise appearance of a savage dog being fended off by capable members of the STARS team, here we instead get a poor soul wearing a knitted sheep-adorned bobble hat who is clearly out of his depth.

This chap is trying to get hold of a loved one, and in his words, he is in a “seriously messed up situation right now”. All in all, the trailer is quite ominous and, well, Creggery. You can see for yourself via the video below.

Cregger – whose other previous work includes 2022’s Barbarian, which our Matt describes as “wonderfully unpredictable” – was first announced to be helming the next Resident Evil movie in March of last year. Since then, the director has assured fans that his adaptation will be “unlike any of the previous films” in the franchise, which seems to be so far so true.

Cregger previously said he hasn’t “seen the movies” that have gone before, because “that’s just not my thing”. The Resident Evil game series, though, well “that’s just a playground I just love,” the director said last year. “I think the movie is going to rip. I think it’s going to rip.”

We’ll find out either way in September, but at least now we have our first proper clue.
