Hall Of Fame Outfielder ‘Favorite’ For Mets Manager Job According To Insider

The Mets missed the postseason after signing Juan Soto before last season, and instead of getting back on track this year, they have looked even worse.

The Mets fired manager Carlos Mendoza after a 34-37 start and replaced him with Andy Green. Finding a new manager will not be easy. New York is a hard market to manage in, and with whispers of a salary cap coming, the allure of having a front office that spends big may be gone. Regardless, the Mets will need to find a new manager to help get them back on track, and one of their former players may be a fit.

“While the New York Mets would love to hire Alex Cora as their next manager, Cora still is expected to join the Phillies after rejecting their offer to replace Rob Thomson, who the club fired on April 28,” wrote USA Today’s Bob Nightengale on Sunday. “The Phillies instead turned to Don Mattingly. Hall of Famer Carlos Beltran is the favorite for the Mets’ vacancy when interim manager Andy Green returns to the front office this winter.”

Beltran was inducted into the Hall of Fame this year. He spent most of his 20-year playing career with the Mets, and serves as a special assistant in the front office currently. He was hired as the Mets manager before the 2020 season, but stepped down before ever managing a game.

Beltran served as the general manager for Puerto Rico in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. His number will be retired by the Mets in September, and he could soon after be named the new manager. As Nightengale noted, he is the favorite, and the fact that he is already with the organization in some capacity certainly helps his odds.
