There are few things more revealing about fashion’s current mood than its footwear. And judging by the fall/winter 2026 runways, designers are feeling particularly indecisive, in the best possible way. One minute, we’re embracing the sensible appeal of equestrian boots; the next, we’re entertaining sculptural wedges and reptilian textures that have absolutely no interest in blending in.

Best Fall Boot Trends Worth Shopping in 2026

At Hermès, Proenza Schouler, and Tory Burch, riding boots returned with a utilitarian sensibility, favoring structured leather, streamlined shafts, and minimal hardware over anything too precious. The message? You needn’t own a horse, or have any intention of getting near one, to appreciate a good equestrian reference.

Elsewhere, fashion’s appetite for animal prints took a decidedly reptilian turn. Isabel Marant and Dries Van Noten experimented with snakeskin finishes, while Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana made a case for croc-embossed leather. The result is a more intimidating cousin of last season’s leopard obsession, with enough personality to make even the simplest outfit look considerably more interesting.

Of course, the moto boot isn’t going anywhere. Buckles, sturdy soles, and a certain rebellious attitude continue to appeal to designers and the street-style set alike. Meanwhile, Michael Rider’s Celine and Miu Miu explored the opposite end of the spectrum with supple, second-skin boots that fit closer to the leg. Unlike their 2010s predecessors, these iterations feel less concerned with making a statement and more interested in creating a clean, uninterrupted silhouette.

Color is getting an adjustment, too. Olive green emerged at Tibi, Joseph, and Acne Studios, offering a welcome alternative to the burgundy and chocolate brown that dominated previous seasons. And for those who prefer their footwear with a little architectural interest, wedge boots are finding renewed relevance amid fashion’s broader fascination with sculptural heels.

The takeaway? Fall 2026 isn’t prescribing one definitive boot silhouette. It’s giving us permission to have several personalities, at least where our shoe closets are concerned.

Ahead, shop the boot trends making the strongest case for a place in your fall rotation.

Slouchy Suede

After seasons of structured, second-skin silhouettes, boots are finally loosening up. Steve Madden’s Lennox taps into the shift with softly gathered taupe suede and an elongated pointed toe, offering a more relaxed interpretation of the season’s Western-adjacent footwear.

Sézane Bridget Knee Boots available now for Fall 2026

Utilitarian Riding Boots

Sézane Bridget Knee Boots

As fall’s footwear trends oscillate between exaggerated proportions and practical restraint, the classic riding boot offers a welcome middle ground. Sézane’s Bridget grounds the silhouette in glossy black leather, with a streamlined knee-high construction that works particularly well against oversized tailoring and fluid skirts.

Dr. Martens Anistone Hi Boots available now for Fall 2026

Moto Boots Galore

The tension between hard and soft continues to define fall dressing, and few accessories capture it quite like the moto boot. Dr. Martens’ Anistone Hi brings industrial hardware, worn-in brown leather, and a substantial sole to the equation, particularly compelling when styled with lace or silk pieces.

Marc Fisher Itzia Snake Boot available now for Fall 2026

The Reptilian Trend

The appeal of reptilian textures lies in their ability to introduce visual interest without relying on color. Marc Fisher’s Itzia boots make the case with a neutral-toned snakeskin finish, sharp pointed toes, and delicate kitten heels that lend a little bite to otherwise restrained dressing.

Free People Ilya Wedge Boots available now for Fall 2026

The Wedge

Once relegated to fashion’s most polarizing footwear category, the wedge is enjoying a rather convincing redemption arc. Free People’s Ilya features a nearly three-inch sculptural heel, glossy black leather, and a pointed toe sharp enough to keep the nostalgia in check.

M.Gemi The Una Bootie available now for Fall 2026

The Sock Silhouette

Where traditional sock boots rely on stretch, M.Gemi’s Una Bootie explores the same close-fitting silhouette through the softness of Italian leather. Its square toe and minimal heel introduce a subtle geometric contrast to the otherwise fluid construction.
