Denmark Confirms Boeing P-8 Poseidon Order Alongside NATO MQ-4C Triton Drone Buy

Two major announcements from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization came on Tuesday, July 7. First, four member nations of NATO have decided to procure up to five Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton advanced surveillance drones. Second, Denmark will complement its new drone with the purchase of two Boeing P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft.

The announcement came at the NATO Summit Defense Industry Forum in Ankara, Turkey. All of these aircraft will modernize the NATO force, but the Triton will be especially useful in early detection to protect sea lines of communication and support operations in the most demanding NATO areas of responsibility, like the Arctic and High North.

Upgrading Joint Assets For Tomorrow’s Threat

Denmark, Finland, Germany, and Norway will all buy their own Tritons for the joint intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance force. These drones will be stationed at the Italian Air Force Base in Sigonella. The naval air station is home to a permanent contingent from the US Navy that hosts rotating Triton and Poseidon platform deployments.

Denmark’s crewed P-8 MPAs will similarly have technology on board to interoperate with other allies that fly the Poseidon, like Germany, the United States, Norway, and the United Kingdom. The production and delivery of all of these new MPAs will be facilitated by an industrial partnership across the Atlantic between NG and Airbus’ Defence and Space division, alongside other European aerospace companies.

The US federal government had approved Denmark’s Foreign Military Sale request for up to three P-8s in late 2025. Around the same time last year, Danish aerospace contractor Terma established a support contract with Boeing to provide maintenance and other services. The Aviationist recounted this statement from Denmark’s Chief of Defence General Michael Hyldgaard following the announcement:

“We must be able to defend all parts of the kingdom. This also applies to the Arctic and North Atlantic areas… With the acquisition of two new P-8 aircraft, we are strengthening the Armed Forces’ task performance in terms of interception and surveillance at very long distances.”

NATO’s ISR Force Goes Digital

The Triton is an upgraded version of the Global Hawk drone flown by the US Air Force for many years. The MQ-4C is designed to fly for 24-hour sorties at an altitude of 50,000-feet (15 km) to maximize the potential of its extremely long-range sensors. Meanwhile, the P-8 is based on the Boeing 737-800, which packs in a long list of sensors like radar and cameras that can fully integrate into the joint ‘kill web.’ The Poseidon also has the capability to strike with torpedoes, missiles, or air-dropped sea mines from an internal weapons bay or external hardpoints.

These two aircraft were made to interoperate from the early stages of development under the US Navy Maritime Patrol modernization efforts that phased out the legacy Lockheed P-3C Orion MPA and EP-3E Aries ISR planes. The Triton is equipped with a powerful active electronically scanned array radar optimized for service vessel detection. Similarly, the Poseidon has a powerful inverse synthetic aperture radar with high-resolution ground tracking. Both platforms feature advanced electro-optical and infrared camera systems along with electronic support measures and full Link-16 ‘combat cloud’ integration.

The Price For NATO’s New Patrol Planes

Owing to its high performance and extremely powerful sensor suite, the Triton is one of the most expensive uncrewed aerial systems in existence today, with a price tag of $200 million or more. That would put the airframes alone at roughly $1 billion, with service and support added on top of that. Still, the Poseidon is likely to cost even more as it is a much larger aircraft with even more systems and equipment, as well as weapons deployment capability.

Each aircraft’s flyaway cost includes built-in pricing for services and equipment under the terms of the FMS contracts to NATO and Denmark. The Republic of Singapore Air Force recently received approval for four P-8s as well, with a total sustainment package priced at $2.3 billion, according to the Aviationist. That breaks down to $575 million for each airplane when including the secondary costs that are lumped into each jet’s delivery price.
