Match scorecard

Glamorgan’s bowlers overcame Surrey resistance to claim a first red-ball victory at The Oval since 2014 and rubber-stamp their place in County Championship Division One next season.

Timm van der Gugten, Ray Toole, Zain ul Hassan and Mason Crane all collected two wickets apiece to dismiss the home side for 427 in their second innings, ending Glamorgan’s winless run of four games.

Ryan Patel’s knock of 132, his first hundred of the season, had strengthened Surrey’s hopes of escaping with a draw – or even having a late dart at the gargantuan target of 612, which would have been a world record chase.

But once the left-hander fell in the final act of the morning session, Glamorgan chipped away steadily and completed a Championship double over Surrey soon after tea.

Surrey resumed their improbable pursuit on 177-2 and Patel rapidly advanced into the 90s with a straight-driven boundary off Toole, only to become bogged down as he crept closer to his century.

Ollie Pope looked less settled at the crease, playing and missing on more than one occasion against the tireless Van der Gugten and getting away with an unconvincing push that sailed just wide of mid-wicket.

It was Ul Hassan who made the breakthrough as first change, ending the partnership of 168 by tempting Pope to drive at his third delivery and nick through to Chris Cooke standing up behind the stumps.

Patel eventually reached three figures with a leg-side single off Crane, while Dan Lawrence began in pugnacious fashion, thumping Van der Gugten to the fence and the pair ticked along nicely until lunch.

However, Glamorgan struck again with the final ball of the session, Ben Kellaway leaping to his right at gully to snag an excellent catch off Mir Hamza and end Patel’s four-hour stint in the middle.

Lawrence, having reverse-swept Kellaway to the rope to take the total beyond 300, tried to repeat the stroke a few overs later and top-edged it, with Asa Tribe running across from slip to gather safely.

Glamorgan opted for an all-spin attack with Kellaway joined by Crane, who immediately sent down a beauty that turned sharply to flatten Adam Thomas’ off stump and leave Surrey’s hopes resting heavily on the shoulders of Ben Foakes.

He and Tom Lawes delayed the visitors’ progress with a stand of 49, but Van der Gugten returned to take the new ball, spearing one low through the defences of Foakes to send his middle stump flying.

Lawes batted calmly, blocking the better deliveries and dispatching loose ones to the fence, only to fall five short of his half-century when Crane pinned him in front and Van der Gugten sealed Glamorgan’s victory by castling James Taylor.
