After a couple of box office flops, Disney’s attempt to convert its animated back-catalogue to live-action titles scored a big hit last year as ‘Lilo & Stitch’ –– which adapted the 2002 original –– became the biggest Memorial Day launch and ended up earning more than $1 billion at the box office.
Forward motion on a sequel was naturally announced last year, and now, via The Hollywood Reporter, we know that Chris Sanders, a key player who co-wrote and co-directed the animated version, is aboard to both write and direct the new film.

Release Date: May 26, 2028
Sanders also has further history with Stitch in particular –– he’s provided the chatty voice for the little blue troublemaker ever since the 2002 outing.

Disney has yet to provide any details on the new movie, but we do know it likely won’t follow the story of any of the animated sequels. Just expect more chaos from Stitch, the alien who escapes captivity and finds a home with lonely Hawaiian girl Lilo (Maia Kealoha) in last year’s live-action version.
When will the ‘Lilo & Stitch’ live-action sequel be in cinemas?
With cameras set to roll this year, Disney has penciled in a May 26, 2028 release date for the new movie.
