Champagne set to make ‘affordability announcement’ as return of the federal fuel excise tax looms

What’s happening on (and off) Parliament Hill, plus the news you need to start your day.

With just a few days to go before the temporary suspension of the federal fuel excise tax is slated to expire — and, as City News reports, “amid calls for it to be extended” from the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, as well as Ontario Premier Doug Ford and the federal Conservatives, among others — Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne is booked in for a mid-afternoon “affordability announcement” in Ottawa that, as per the advisory issued by his office, is part of his government’s ongoing bid to “help Canadian families and businesses lower everyday costs,” which is precisely how the initial decision to hit pause on the tax was presented by the prime minister earlier this year. (1:30 p.m.)

Elsewhere in the capital, Jobs and Families Minister Patty Hajdu drops by the local offices of Ottawa Hydro to launch the Energy and Electricity Workforce Alliance, which “will identify pressing labour market gaps and align investments and activities to support skills development,” according to her office. (10 a.m.)

Also hitting the late summer ministerial circuit: Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson joins Secretary of State for Rural Development Buckley Belanger for back-to-back announcements in Saskatoon, starting with a morning visit to RMD Engineering Inc., a local manufacturing firm that produces “world-class hardware built in Saskatchewan,” to highlight new federal support for Saskatoon-area “businesses and workers” (10:30 a.m. CT) with “critical minerals update” from the minister — and a joint media availability — later this afternoon. (1 p.m. CT)

Rounding out the roster, Justice Minister Sean Fraser teams up with fellow Nova Scotia Liberal MP Darren Fisher to promote new “investments” that, according to the advisory, will “help businesses affected by trade disruptions” during an afternoon stop at the Dartmouth headquarters of Ace Machining Ltd. (2 p.m AT)

IN THE CHAMBER

Both the House of Commons and the Senate have shut down for the summer, with regular parliamentary proceedings set to resume in September.
