Cathay Pacific Has Axed 16 Long-Haul Destinations In 2 Decades: See The Full List

Cathay Pacific is the world’s 15th-largest airline for long-haul passenger flights. Through the rest of 2026, the oneworld member has scheduled an average of 44 daily long-haul services from its hub at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG).

31 passenger destinations cover that distance, all of which are in Africa, Australasia, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. In the past 20 years, Cathay has stopped flying to 16 long-haul destinations. Other recent articles have looked at the cuts made by British Airways, Delta Air Lines, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic.

A Word About Cathay’s Long-Haul Cuts

As usual, some information is needed about the process used in this article. Cathay’s schedule submission to Cirium Diio was used to examine the carrier’s passenger route network from January 2006 to July 2026. This was then compared to what’s scheduled to operate between August 2026 and May 2027. Any routes that ended before January 2006 are excluded.

This process identified that 16 long-haul destinations are no longer served. Of course, they are all reachable with Cathay’s alliance, codeshare, and other partners. This article only focuses on long-haul markets from HKG. As such, anywhere that’s shorter is excluded. This is why this article does not mention places no longer served within parts of Asia.

A Summary Of Cathay’s Cuts

In the past 20 years, Cathay has ceased flying to the following places. The most recent elimination was Cairns Airport (CNS), which is the largest city in tropical North Queensland. Renowned as a gateway to brilliant tourist activities, the sun-soaked region is particularly popular with Japanese tourists.

Cathay flew to CNS for many years until 2019. Historically, some flights were tagged with those to Brisbane Airport (BNE), with the Airbus A330-300 deployed. Cathay reintroduced HKG-CNS flights in December 2024, which operated on a three-weekly northern winter basis through February 2025. Then served on a purely standalone basis: no departures are scheduled for 2026 or 2027. The route was also popular for freight, including North Queensland companies exporting seafood, meats, fruits, and more.

Notice that nearly 40% of the cuts occurred in 2020, which was influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. The airline simply decided that the financial or network contribution was insufficient, relative to what else it could do with the aircraft. One of the most intriguing developments occurred in 2018, when Cathay decided to remove Copenhagen Airport (CPH) from its network. Flights only lasted for five months. A lack of premium demand did not help.

Cathay From HKG To IAD

In the past 20 years, Cathay has ceased passenger service from HKG to two US airports, including IAD. The busiest airport serving the broad Washington DC area, IAD was part of the HKG airline’s network for less than two years. Year-round flights, which operated four times a week, existed between September 2018 and February 2020. Both the Airbus A350-900 and A350-1000 were deployed.

The US Department of Transportation (DOT) shows that 129,881 round-trip passengers were transported, with 77.7% of seats filled. Given the then-newness of the route and the massive impact of the pandemic, this was perhaps not overly bad. However, the load factor was much lower than for EWR (85.1%), which is also no longer served, and for the airline’s US operations generally (81.1%). Of course, the load factor is just one performance measure, and it is always about how it was achieved.
