Budget bill, labour disputes and VIA Rail in the spotlight

What’s on the agenda for the House and Senate committees today.

Two Team Carney frontbenchers are set to hit the Senate committee circuit this evening, starting with Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon, who will field questions on Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne’s omnibus bid to roll out measures unveiled in his inaugural budget speech last fall during a one-hour session at NATIONAL FINANCE, with representatives of Ecojustice, Quebec Environmental Law Centre and the Canadian Civil Liberties Association booked to appear during the second hour of the meeting. (6:45 p.m.)

Also on deck: Jobs and Families Minister Patty Hajdu will share her perspective on the “maintenance of activities or essential services in the federally regulated rail and marine sectors in the case of labour disruptions” with TRANSPORT AND COMMUNICATIONS members. (6:45 p.m.)

Back on the House of Commons track, TRANSPORT, INFRASTRUCTURE AND COMMUNITIES members will get a progress report on the ongoing push to boost “VIA Rail’s safety and customer and service” from VIA’s interim president Mathieu Paquette, as well as the Coalition pour le retour deservices d’un train de passagers en Gaspésies , before circling back to their self-initiated review of “supporting, diversifying and modernizing Quebec and Canada’s ports.” (4:30 p.m.)

Over at FISHERIES AND OCEANS, MPs continue to explore the state of the Atlantic mackerel and herring fisheries. (4 p.m.)

Rounding out the roster, PUBLIC ACCOUNTS members are going through the fine print of Conservative MP Adam Chambers’ proposal to establish a “debt forgiveness registry” with senior officials from the Canada Revenue Agency, Finance and Treasury Board. (4 p.m.)
