British Airways Reveals 2 Huge Changes To Airbus A380 Routes

British Airways has been changing its Airbus A380 operations recently. For example, it has removed the type from its Los Angeles route this winter. The changes are mainly because it is retrofitting its aircraft, with the number of seats being reduced from 469 to just 421.

More developments were revealed in BA’s schedule update to Cirium Diio over the weekend. It will no longer fly the superjumbo to Johannesburg from the end of October, but will fly the type to Singapore from September. It’ll be the first time that the airline’s double-deckers have been used to Changi since mid-2025.

The oneworld member’s most recent schedule submission indicates that the A380 will once again fly between London Heathrow and Singapore. This will occur on September 7, with a daily operation planned from then onward. BA’s schedule is only known until the end of March 2027, with this route seeing the type until at least then.

This is a significant development for various reasons. It is BA’s new longest A380 route by both distance and block time. It will cover 5,879 nautical miles (10,888 km) each way, surpassing what was number one this winter, Heathrow to Johannesburg, by a significant 20%. It will also be timed at up to 14 hours and 40 minutes, exceeding the length of Johannesburg flights by up to three hours and 15 minutes.

Heathrow-Singapore will have three A380 users for the first time in more than a year, with BA joining Qantas and Singapore Airlines. Not many routes have a double-decker airline at both ends. Based on November 2026 data, it will have more A380 operators than any other airport pair. In total, four of the seven daily services will be on the type.

BA has two daily flights to Changi. One continues to Sydney, while the other is a standalone, so-called terminator service. As in previous years, the A380 will be on the latter, with the schedule shown below. The 469-seater will replace the 216-seat Boeing 787-9, providing a considerable 117% more seats per departure. This includes 55 more business seats. Unfortunately, neither equipment currently has BA’s new cabins.

BA Has Removed The A380 From Its Johannesburg Route

The latest schedule indicates that BA’s final Johannesburg-bound A380 departure, at least for now, will leave Heathrow on October 24. That is the final day of the northern aviation summer, based on IATA slot seasons. The following day, BA, like other northern airlines, will adopt winter schedules. From then on, the 469-seater will be replaced by the 216-seat 787-9.

BA has two daily flights to Johannesburg. Usually, both services are on the A380 during the winter, when it is summer in the Southern Hemisphere. In a previous schedule update, BA had halved the type’s winter flights to South Africa to daily. Now it has been removed entirely.

It will be the first time since the pandemic that the double-decker has not been deployed on the long route during the winter. This is, of course, highly likely to change in 2027, when the much more premium 421-seaters, with new cabins, will be operational. It’ll provide a much better and more competitive offering.

BA Plans Five Daily Departures On The A380 This Winter

As of April 27 and subject to change, the latest information indicates that BA has scheduled five daily A380-operated flights from Heathrow. Just four routes will be available. It’ll fly the superjumbo to Dubai (daily), Miami (two daily), San Francisco (daily), and Singapore (daily).

Compared to last November, which had the fourth-highest number of departures for that month on record, services have fallen by 29%. And they’re a tenth lower than before the pandemic in November 2019. More routes and flights will be gradually added to BA’s 2027 schedule as aircraft are retrofitted.

When writing, it is not known when the first flight on its new 421-seat A380 will take place. In contrast, Emirates’ inaugural passenger-carrying service on its new 569-seat superjumbo will be on May 1. Both airlines are adding additional premium seats to their frames.
