Before New Balance’s sneaker collaborations really kicked into high gear during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Boston-based footwear company was experimenting with new partners by allotting them scarce production runs.

The earliest collaborations from brands like Aries, JJJJound and Stray Rats were manufactured in extremely small runs, with 100 to 200 pairs produced for each project until it quickly became clear that demand had far surpassed supply. Now, with its latest collaboration arriving this week, New Balance’s Made in England program looks as though it could be reverting back to the practice of highly limited releases.

In partnership with London-based jewelry designer Bleue Burnham, New Balance will launch the Made in UK 991v1 on Saturday. With just 240 units produced, the Bleue Burnham x New Balance 991v1 sneaker is being introduced alongside a private garden created for employees at the footwear brand’s Flimby factory to enjoy during their downtime. 

The Flimby Garden was designed by Burnham, its first garden design, and is intended to be a restorative, relaxing space for employees to step away from their busy work days. To help create the garden, Burnham sought out English gardener Monty Don, who is also featured in the collaboration’s campaign.

“Throughout the garden, a series of thoughtfully placed seating areas invite the New Balance team to pause and spend time amongst the garden during breaks. For more communal moments, picnic benches are positioned within the largest flower beds, with cherry trees that grow through the center of each table, where one would traditionally find an umbrella, providing a natural and playful form of shading,” reads Bleue Burnham’s announcement.

As for the Bleue Burnham x New Balance 991v1 sneaker, it’s intended to represent the colors of the garden with its pinecone brown suede upper, multicolor contrast “wild garden” stitching and a set of alternate lime green shoelaces. Following the release of the brown colorway, a black leather version is expected to follow with a December release.
