Amazon will publish whatever 007 First Light sequels there may be, as it muscles in on IO Interactive’s operation as new owner of James Bond

UPDATE 6.18pm: Amazon has shared a new statement regarding its relationship with 007 First Light developer IO Interactive and any future Bond games.

“Amazon MGM holds the rights to any future James Bond video games but it’s still too early to discuss future projects,” it said (thanks, Wario64). “We have a great relationship with IO Interactive and are proud of what we’ve accomplished together on 007 First Light. Our partners at IO will reveal more about 007 First Light in the near future and we’re looking forward to sharing what’s next.”

The original story continues below.

ORIGINAL 5.07pm: Given the early success of 007 First Light, it’s more than likely we will get more IO Interactive James Bond games in the future. IOI has even suggested it would love to make a trilogy of James Bond games if it can – and given how First Light ends – no spoilers – there’s room for it. However, if IOI does make more James Bond games, franchise owner Amazon has said it wants to be more involved.

Amazon bought the James Bond rights last year for $20m, which is why IO Interactive was clear to publish 007 First Light, because the deal was done before Amazon took Bond over, Amazon gaming boss Jeff Gattiss explained to Polygon. But if IO Interactive were to make any sequels, they would be overseen “by MGM and, theoretically, by Amazon Game Studios”, Gattiss added.

Amazon does apparently “have a stake” in 007 First Light as the Bond owner, so it will no doubt be pleased the game sold 1.5m copies in 24 hours. Analysts now estimate that figure has climbed to over 2m since the game’s release on 27th May.

“007 First Light is less cerebral and replayable than IO’s World of Assassination trilogy, but makes up for it with excellent fistfights and oodles of charm,” Rick Lane wrote in Eurgamer’s own review, awarding 007 First Light four stars. And the good news is, there is more to come, and IOI has significant post-release plans for 007 First Light.
