Alberta split from Canada would damage province’s economy


Longstanding disputes between Alberta and the federal government have led to a sovereignty movement that’s seeking independence from Ottawa in order to reap more of the rewards of the region’s natural resources, which account for the vast majority of the country’s oil production. Stay Free Alberta, a separatist group, garnered 222,597 verified signatures on a petition to support a separation referendum, about 7.5 per cent of registered voters.
