Overalls aren’t just a “cozy” item — they’re a genuinely stylish piece of clothing and surprisingly versatile garment. Some look just like the overalls of the ‘70s or ‘90s, and some introduce a touch of modernity. But unlike fast fashion alternatives that use chemicals and waste tons of water, ethical options factor in better materials and more thoughtful manufacturing to make a long-lasting item with a lower carbon footprint.
Why wear sustainable clothing?
There are many reasons why you might want to opt for more sustainable clothing, ranging from supporting brands that cut their own pollution to wearing fabrics made without harmful pesticides or chemicals. But ultimately, the reason to shop these sustainable brands is to do all these things without compromising on the quality or comfort of your clothes.
How can I style overalls?
If you love overalls, you probably already know: It can be easy to look a bit like a farmer if you don’t style them thoughtfully. The key is to balance with sharp, modern elements: pointed boots, a button-up shirt, tons of gold jewelry, and so on. Let the overalls be the standout piece, and style yourself against it in a way that feels authentic to you. In the fall, you may want to size up on your overalls so that you can fit a sweater underneath, or otherwise opt for a version that fits well under a coat.
We’ve also chosen overalls that work in a number of different contexts, from classic dark denim to brilliant white. And we found overalls that offer some variety in how you wear them (high and fitted, low and loose, only one strap buckled, and so on).
What should I look for in my overalls?
Construction: Generally, the main appeal of overalls is comfort, so opt for a pair that has a touch of roominess to it. If the straps are adjustable, that can also help with fit — and it’s a nice feature if you like to wear your overalls in different ways. If you’re prioritizing function, consider the number and placement of pockets to see if they’ll work for you. And never forget the inseam length, which will help you determine where they’ll fall on your ankle and whether you’ll need to cuff them.
Material: Comfort isn’t just about construction. The material(s) used in your overalls will determine how well they fit on your body. A 100% organic cotton overall will probably be somewhat heavier weight and stiffer, with less stretch. Hemp or linen can be lighter and more breathable, by contrast. When there’s a touch of spandex, elastane, or other stretch material, it will allow some “give” in the clothing. So if your size changes, or you just want that extra room, you may want to opt for the latter.
Cost: Fair trade standards, sustainable materials, ethical supply chain: it all costs more than fast fashion. But there are brands with reasonable prices and high production standards; Additionally, an investment piece will probably last longer — and you can wear it more times than a piece that’ll fall apart quickly.

Our team has spent years researching sustainable, nontoxic overalls and testing options in our own closets. For this guide, we researched the best overalls available today, compared materials and value, and read through thousands of customer reviews to curate our favorite options for every budget (with prices starting at $60). We update this guide regularly with new brands and styles that meet our criteria below.

1. Outerknown
Best for | Classic
Sizes | XS–XXL
Price starting at | $198
Launched by professional surfer Kelly Slater, Outerknown creates sustainable fashion inspired by nature. The brand now makes 99% of their clothes with either organic, recycled, or regenerated fibers — and every piece is ethically made in accordance with the Fair Labor Association. They have two overalls: the Voyage Cord Overalls (which are, as the name implies, corduroy in navy or tan) and the Maker Overalls in light denim. In terms of look, this is as classic as it gets. The Maker in particular is a vintage-inspired timeless piece, crafted out of rigid organic cotton denim. This gives a really nice shape, with a straight fit through the waist and a modest wide leg. The racerback design in back, with adjustable straps, and tons of pockets make it quite versatile. It works in a bunch of different contexts (gardening, chores, errands, and so on) and with a bunch of different tops. There’s so much storage room that you don’t even need to take a purse when you’re running errands. Do note that because there’s no stretch, you’ll want to look closely at the size guide. As for the Voyage, it too has a vintage-inspired design and a bunch of pockets, made from regenerative organic cotton and a touch of spandex. And, in case you’re curious, they try to use recycled spandex wherever possible — plus they just design a lot of their clothes to not need it.
Customer Review | “I love these overalls — in fact, I’m wearing them right now. The fabric is high quality and seems durable. I love the slight angle of the pocket on the front. It adds character. I’m 5’2″ and ordered an XS. I need to fold them up twice at the ankle for the right fit, but the cuff just adds to the overall relaxed look. They are a bit baggy even in the extra small, but I know that’s by design. I snatched them up as soon as they went on sale, and I’m glad I did.” – Lori M. (Read more reviews.)

2. Toad&Co.
Best for | Variety
Sizes | XS–XL
Price starting at | $145
Slow fashion brand Toad&Co. has a small but impressive range of jumpsuits, rompers, and overalls. Their Piñon overall is a particular fan favorite, with a slouchy and relaxed silhouette and oversized patch pockets, made from a mix of Tencel and cotton. It’s meant to be worn long, with the legs pooling at the bottom (the whole thing feels very ’90s in the best way). There’s no break-in period, and it feels comfortable from the moment that you put it on. The Cattail is a corduroy option, and as such has a little more structure and a slightly higher fit on the body — but it’s also soft and light, without the inflexibility you sometimes see in corduroy. Both have a comfortable racerback design and adjustable straps, with the pockets well-placed for storage. Toad&Co. also has a few sale options for those pieces that feel more summery, so keep an eye out on their website. With every purchase you make, 1% is donated to a cause of your choosing. And, beyond that, the brand has a ToadAgain platform for pre-loved clothing trade-ins and a maintenance guide to help keep your clothes looking optimal.
Customer Review | “I’d been hoping to find comfy denim overalls and y’all must have heard me! I love these. Nice and loose, the fabric is so soft, and the straps are adjustable. The length was long for me so I shortened the legs, but I’m not complaining!” – Deborah L. (Read more reviews.)

3. Loup
Best for | Size inclusivity
Sizes | XXS-4X
Price starting at | $154
We know firsthand how hard it can be to find plus-sized overall options — which is why Loup is such a lifesaver for their jumpsuits and overalls. This New York City brand is locally made, and sizing goes up to 4X (44” waist). They also have a repair program to guarantee the life of your piece — if it gets a tear, simply send them back, and Loup will sew them up for you, for free. In terms of products, they have a couple of bestselling options that balance comfort with style. Their Knot Overalls come in a bunch of colors and are made with just a touch (2%) of spandex. They’re also pre-washed, meaning you don’t have to worry about them shrinking on you. The style is cropped, and the inseam is different depending on the numerical size, so make sure to check and see where it’ll hit on your ankle. The Madelyn overalls are slightly more modern: a wider leg, zipper on the body, less obvious pockets. Both have a cool cross-back style that lends visual interest to an otherwise very straightforward design. A note on their sizing: They do sell out quickly in some of their styles, so be sure to add yourself to the waitlist if the color you want comes back in stock.

4. Jungmaven
Best for | Shorts
Sizes | XS–XL
Price starting at | $93
Sustainable apparel brand Jungmaven primarily uses hemp as the basis for its clothing, and they cut and sew everything in Los Angeles, CA. Because it grows fast, uses much less water and chemicals than other materials like cotton, and is more durable than a lot of similar fabrics, hemp is often used for home goods like sheets — but it’s also an underrated material for clothes. If you love overall shorts (particularly ones that are ’90s-inspired) this might be the pair for you; You can still absolutely wear it in the fall over a sweater and some tights. The Alma is made from a strong hemp denim (55% hemp, 45% organic cotton) and has a fitted style and short length. It comes in two colors, a mid and dark blue, and the adjustable straps mean you can wear it a touch lower if you don’t want it quite so high on your legs. Despite its relatively short length, it still has six pockets (two front, two back, one zippered, and one pen pocket). The Alma also comes in a twill version that comes in six cool colors and is a non-denim alternative if you want a less casual short. The brand has a full hemp care guide, but long story short, you can machine wash these on cool and even tumble dry them on low without the shorts shrinking or falling apart.
Customer Review | “Most flattering, comfortable overall shorts I’ve ever worn! I want to wear them every day. I will say they run SUPER small. I’m usually M/L and needed 2XL but I absolutely love them and my only complaint is that the other colors only go up to XL because I want more!” – Lindsay R. (Read more reviews.)

5. Quince
Best for | Basics
Sizes | XS-XL
Price starting at | $60
Affordable, high-quality brand Quince has a good denim selection that reviewers say is good value for the money — holding up well in the wash and not wearing out like other cheaper denim brands. Quince has a nice set of options for overalls (including some chic maternity styles, if that applies to you), especially their bestselling 100% organic denim version. It’s a simple, no-frills option, with a racerback construction, adjustable straps and side buttons to better fit your shape, functional pockets on the front, back, and chest, a classic slim leg, and metal hardware for an elevated feel. Because there’s no stretch, it can be helpful to size up if you’re in between sizes. Quince’s organic stretch cotton twill overalls are a good option if you do want that stretch (3% spandex, to be exact). This is more of a utilitarian pick (as in, it looks a touch more workman-like than the denim version); It’s got the same functional pockets, adjustable straps, and side button closure, and the brass hardware is a nice contrast. It’s another of their bestsellers for a reason — reviewers love it. The brand also has shortalls in a slightly longer inseam length than Jungmaven’s if you feel like exploring that style.
Customer Review | “I love these overalls! I’ve tried several brands and returned all of them and these are by far the best and a great price! It fit true to size and it’s loose enough but I also don’t feel like it looks baggy. Perfect length too! I got a medium and I’m 5’7.” – Lynnsey M. (Read more reviews.)

6. Faherty
Best for | Style
Sizes | 00–16
Price starting at | $114
This family-run lifestyle and clothing company has a relaxed-meets-elevated aesthetic that makes it highly stylish on top of being ethically made. As of this writing, Faherty has a couple of overall and jumpsuit options. The Michelle denim jumpsuit is technically sleeved instead of strappy, but the vibe is similar: The button-front closure and multiple pockets look very vintage in the best way. A moderate wide leg and cropped inseam add a dash of modernity to the look; The construction is organic cotton, with 6% Elasterell-P and 2% elastane for stretch. The Sun Strider romper is made from 100% linen (and thus is non-stretch), and is lighter and airier — the same style as a shortall, but less bulky and stiff. With the same pockets and adjustable straps, it’s the more intuitive choice for a loungewear outfit. As Faherty updates its brand offerings, you may see newer styles — so keep an eye on the site. But sustainability remains at the core of their work: Faherty aims to source 100% of their materials responsibly by 2030, and they are committed to a responsible, traceable supply chain. And you can buy, sell, or trade in your worn-out items when you’re done with them.
Customer Review | “Adorable outfit! Love anything that is a one and done, and this is certainly that! Fits great & looks super chic.” – Johanna S. (Read more reviews.)
