I’m a Commerce Editor. Here Are the Holiday Gifts I’m Actually Buying for Loved Ones

I’ve worked as a commerce editor for nearly a decade, and one of the best parts of my job is testing products and discovering brands I might never have known about otherwise. I’ve been fortunate enough to try hundreds of products over the years, many of which I couldn’t afford to test on my own (I mean, who can realistically buy 10+ sets of organic king-sized sheets or an entire skincare collection just to figure out which one is best?).

I’ve also had some pretty incredible opportunities to get to know the people behind these brands. I’ve visited Avocado’s mattress factory and traveled to Peru with Outerknown to see where they grow their regenerative organic cotton and how they make their clothes. Seeing this side of the industry has been one of my favorite parts of the job, and it’s taught me a lot about what makes a product worth investing in.

More than anything, I hope all of this testing makes shopping a little easier for you. There is so much noise out there, especially around the holidays. Between the constant emails, social media ads, and everyone telling us what we need to buy, it can feel overwhelming to shop for ourselves, let alone find thoughtful gifts for the people we love.

So this year, I wanted to share a more personal gift guide. These are some of my absolute favorite products I’ve tested over the years, many of which I’ve gone on to purchase with my own money (sometimes more than once!) or gift to friends and family. They’re the brands I come back to and the things I find myself recommending in real life, even when I’m not writing about them.

I also really believe in buying fewer, better things, and that’s what you’ll find here. These products have impressed me with their quality, sustainability, and how well they work in my everyday life. They’re not sitting in a closet collecting dust or waiting to be donated. Most of them get used regularly, if not daily, in our home.

I hope this list helps cut the guesswork out of holiday shopping and saves you time and money along the way. And I’d love to hear from you, too! If there’s a product you absolutely swear by or find yourself gifting year after year, please share it in the comments. I’m always looking for new recommendations, and I know other readers are, too.

1. MATE the Label Organic Cotton Socks — $48 (3-pack)

I’ve always been a buy-my-socks-in-bulk kind of person, but that changed when I tested MATE’s organic cotton crew socks three years ago. They’re cozy, breathable, and surprisingly durable. I’ve worn them walking miles through Berlin in the November rain, where they kept my feet warm and dry, and with Birkenstocks in Southern California without my feet getting sweaty. I still have my original pairs, and when they finally get a hole, I’ll definitely be repairing or replacing them. These are the socks I love gifting to friends, and I love that they are organic cotton.

2. OSEA Hyaluronic Lip Oil Booster — $28

I’ve reviewed almost everything in OSEA’s collection and have a few longtime favorites, including the Ocean Cleanser and Water Cream. But this lip oil is the one product I keep buying. Made with hyaluronic acid and seaweed, it’s incredibly hydrating, and a little goes a long way. I received my first bottle as a sample and knew I’d repurchase it, but I didn’t expect it to last over six months with almost nightly use! It’s a great stocking stuffer, especially paired with OSEA’s Vagus Nerve Pillow Mist.

3. Rothy’s Penny Clog — $160

I’m newer to the Rothy’s fan club, but I’m already persuading anyone who asks to get the Penny Clog. It’s an elevated everyday shoe that’s comfortable enough to wear all day. One of our editors recently tested her Rothy’s by walking over 100,000 steps in Europe, and I’ve practically worn holes in mine as a new mom (except not actually, because they are incredibly durable). They don’t slip off my feet, offer great support, and have even accommodated my swelling feet during this second pregnancy. They’re made with recycled materials and run true to size, which makes gifting easier. Plus, who doesn’t love a good clog?

4. Geometry Throw Blanket — $89

I’ve tested quite a few products from Geometry, including the kitchen towels, beach blanket, and bath towels, but the newer throw blankets have especially impressed me. I’m picky about my movie-night blankets, and these check all the boxes: huge, buttery soft, warm without being too heavy, and available in the most fun prints. They’re also made from post-consumer recycled materials using less water than traditional manufacturing methods. If a throw is outside your budget, the kitchen towels are indestructible. One of mine even has a burn hole from the stove and still works beautifully after hundreds of washes.

5. Outerknown Blanket Shirt — $168

Of all the sustainable fashion brands I’ve tested, Outerknown keeps standing out for its certifications, quality, and longevity. I grew up in the mountains, so the outdoorsy style is right up my alley, but their clothes work for anyone. I’ve owned the famous Blanket Shirt for years and love throwing it on instead of a jacket. It’s heavyweight, durable, and made with organic cotton. Outerknown is also my go-to for gifting the men in my life. My husband recently told me he couldn’t believe he’d gone so long without their T-shirts and joggers!

6. HYER Goods Ring Bag — $465

My HYER Goods bag is an absolute wardrobe staple, and I’m HARD on it. I’ve spilled lotion inside, coffee on the suede, and my toddler loves chewing on the straps. Yet it’s surprisingly forgiving and easy to clean. It’s spacious without feeling bulky, has a zippered interior pocket, and never hurts my shoulder. HYER Goods also uses deadstock leather and other leftover materials that might otherwise go to waste, which is why I’m big on supporting this brand and its price point. They are doing seriously good work and these are the kind of bags that you buy once and keep forever. It’s definitely a splurge and a gift for someone very special in your life (or yourself!), but the brand also has more affordable items, like wallets and accessories for under $100.

7. TheraFace Depuffing Wand — $169.99

I’ve tested so many LED masks and wellness gadgets that most of them honestly blur together. But I actually use this depuffing wand, and it’s been a godsend postpartum when eye patches aren’t enough to make me look alive. I love cold treatments for my face but don’t have the energy for a DIY morning face ice bath, so this gives me that refreshing feeling while my coffee brews. I’ve packed it for red-eye flights, too, and the battery lasts forever (I think I’ve charged mine three times in two years!). My sisters always try to steal it when they visit.

8. Levoit AERO Vacuum — $300

I wouldn’t normally recommend gifting someone a vacuum (definitely don’t do it unprompted!), but this one has become a genuine dinner conversation topic for me. It’s SO GOOD. It’s efficient, space-saving, empties itself, and handles everything from toddler crumbs to bigger messes. I actually prefer it to my much more expensive Dyson, which is now collecting dust because it keeps clogging and driving me insane. I reach for the Levoit daily, and if someone on my list mentioned wanting a new vacuum, this is the one I’d buy.

9. Bare Hands Dry Gloss Manicure Kit — $42

I love gel manicures because at least my nails look put together, even when I haven’t had time to shower or do my makeup. But they’re expensive and always leave my nails feeling damaged. Regular polish never lasts on me, either. I discovered Bare Hands a few years ago and fell in love with the cuticle oil and nail file (truly the best nail file ever). The Dry Gloss Kit focuses on natural nail care rather than polish, so it’s great even for someone who doesn’t get manicures. For anyone who loves color, I’d pair it with a polish from Côte.
