United Airlines Adds Rare Winter Boeing 777-300ER Flights To This European City

With the unstoppable tide of time sweeping us towards the start of the IATA Winter Schedule at the end of October, there is a lot to look forward to in terms of route additions in the coming season. However, among the new corridors that will be served regularly on a long-term basis, there are also certain short-term additions that are worth looking at. United Airlines from San Francisco to Barcelona is one of them.

As recently reported by Aeroroutes, the Star Alliance founding member will operate a pair of rotations on this lengthy transatlantic route next winter: one in February and one in March. While United already flies from San Francisco International (SFO) to Barcelona El Prat Airport (BCN) on a regular basis in the summer, this additional pair of winter rotations taps into demand centered around an event.

The event in question is the Mobile World Congress, which will be held in Barcelona from March 1 to 4, 2027. This year’s iteration of the telecommunications trade show marked its 20th anniversary in the Spanish city, and almost 105,000 people attended. With this in mind, United Airlines is looking to tap into this extra short-term corporate demand by operating two round trips from San Francisco.

These will leave San Francisco at 7:00 PM local time as UA672 on February 27 and March 3, touching down in Barcelona at 3:20 PM the next day. Meanwhile, the return leg, UA673, will leave Barcelona at 5:30 PM on February 28 and March 4, reaching San Francisco at 8:50 PM on the same day. Patrick Quayle, United’s SVP of Global Network Planning and Alliances, has previously said of the carrier’s network:

“No other airline gives customers nonstop access to as many unique international destinations and experiences from the US as United. Our network provides the most choice and variety for our customers.”

United Airlines’ jet of choice for these two rare winter rotations is the Boeing 777-300ER. According to the carrier’s seat maps, these widebody twinjets have a grand total of 350 seats on board: 60 in ‘Polaris’ business class, 24 in ‘Premium Plus’ premium economy, and 266 in economy class. Of these 266 economy seats, 62 are designated as ‘Economy Plus,’ offering 34 inches of pitch instead of 31.

According to Cirium, an aviation analytics company, United Airlines first served Barcelona from San Francisco in 2024, operating 156 flights with the 276-seat Boeing 777-200ER. These services ran from May to October, and, the following year, 2025 saw 179 rotations with the 777-200ER from March to October. This year, United penciled in 159 rotations, and switched to the Boeing 787-9 in September.

This represented a slight drop in capacity compared to the Boeing 777-200ER, whose 276 seats are split between 50 in Polaris business class, 24 in Premium Plus premium economy, and 202 in economy (of which 46 have extra legroom). After all, the 787-9 has just 257 seats on board: 48 in Polaris business class, 21 in Premium Plus premium economy, and 188 in economy (39 with extra legroom).

Such Events Often Attract Rare Long-Haul Flights

The Mobile World Congress is far from the only trade show that attracts rare long-haul flights during the quieter winter months. Elsewhere, the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is another good example. For instance, Delta Air Lines added short-term routes from Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) and Taipei Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) to Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) this January.

Meanwhile, in 2025, at least five airlines added special widebody flights for that year’s iteration of the Consumer Electronics Show, as detailed in Simple Flying’s reporting at the time. Alongside Delta, United flew widebodies to CES from five domestic hubs, while American’s additions were both domestic (Miami) and international (London and Tokyo). From abroad, Asiana Airlines and Air France also featured.
