Lobby wrap: Space firms seek federal lift

The latest from the federal lobbyist registry.

It’s another big week for Canada’s space sector, with Crew-13 Astronaut Joshua Kutryk arriving at the International Space Station for a six-month mission. Back on Earth, that momentum is also showing up in this week’s federal lobby wrap.

LUNR Aerospace Corporation and Canada’s Space Innovators are both lobbying Ottawa for funding and potential partnerships with the government as Canada works to expand its domestic space launch capabilities and retain talent in the sector..

The lobbying comes as Parliament considers Bill C-28, the Canadian Space Launch Act, which seeks to establish federal regulation and financial framework for domestic space launches.

LUNR Aerospace, a Canadian startup developing launch vehicles, is seeking federal support to help attract and retain specialized talent. The company is also pursuing funding through the Innovation for Defence Excellence and Security (IDEaS) program.

The activity comes amid growing investment in Canada’s launch industry.

Just this week, Canada Rocket Company, an aerospace company developing medium-lift rocket, announced its plans to build a large-scale rocket engine testing facility, a $30-million investment in Canadian launch capability. They also received $8.3 million from the government’s IDEaS program.
