Final Fantasy 7 Revelation finally gets a 2027 release date, as Final Fantasy Resonance gets a surprise demo

We already knew that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation was going to launch sometime in ‘spring 2027’, but today director Naoki Hamaguchi took to Sony’s State of Play livestream to inform us all that the game has a locked-in release date: 8th April, 2027. It’ll launch worldwide, and on all platforms – that’s PS5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X/S, and PC – at the same time (the first game in the series to do so).

In case you’re unaware, the game is the final part of a trilogy that began with Final Fantasy 7 Remake and tells the story of the original FF7 in three parts. This closing chapter sees Cloud finally catch up to Sephiroth as the heroic gang tries to prevent the almighty meteor from colliding with the planet. To make matters worse, the existential threat to all life on the continent has also awoken planetary defense mechanisms known as Weapons which, in defending the planet at all costs, may also pose a risk to humanity. D’oh.

The State of Play trailer showed off new gameplay footage, showing us how Cid’s airship – the Highwind – can be used to travel to the regions of the world. This will be the biggest game in the trilogy, by far, including all the locations we’ve seen in the other games, plus some new original areas, too. It’s very much ‘the final disc’ of the original FF7, if you ask me, and has been scaled appropriately. I recently had a big chat with Hamaguchi, and was taken aback by his humbleness and vision for the trilogy. If you’re excited about what the game has to offer, I encourage you to give the feature a read.

Elsewhere, Square Enix has announced a playable demo for its upcoming HD-2D RPG, Final Fantasy Resonance. Downloadable today (and weighing in at about 5GB), the demo lets you try out the entire first chapter of the game. This is about three to five hours of game. And – as Square Enix has got in the habit of doing – it will let you import any save data to the full game when it launches next month.

Though this was announced in a PS5 stream, the demo is also available on Switch, Switch 2 and Xbox. I got to play a different bit of the game at Gamescom, and it left me really impressed – take a look at my Final Fantasy Resonance preview if you want to know why this was, probably, my game of the show.
