Major Expansion: Condor Unveils 1st-Ever Flights To USA’s Busiest Airport [Map]

In a highly intriguing development, Condor has revealed that it will fly from Frankfurt Airport (FRA), which is the leisure carrier’s most-served airport, to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD).

Clarity is needed about including ‘busiest’ in the article title. While everyone knows that Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) is the world’s busiest airport for passengers, ORD is comfortably number one for the number of flights. Its top position is due to having so many services on regional jets.

As identified by Ishrion Aviation, Condor will take off from FRA to ORD on May 14, 2027. Surprisingly, the carrier will fly daily, with all flights being on the airline’s sole widebody equipment: the 310-seat Airbus A330-900. According to ch-aviation, Condor has 18 A330-900neos, each with 30 seats in business (1-2-1), 64 seats in premium economy (2-4-2; 35″ pitch), and 216 seats in economy (2-4-2; 30″ pitch).

The following schedule means that only one frame will be required to serve ORD daily. Notice the block time to the US, which will have headwinds, of nine hours and 20 minutes. While not a like-for-like or fair comparison, this is only 15 minutes longer than Air Canada’s new offering from Tenerife South back to Toronto on the A321XLR.

The local FRA-ORD market is relatively small. In the 12 months to April 2026, booking data shows that 78,000 passengers flew between the two airports, whether nonstop with Lufthansa or United Airlines or via a hub en route. While it was only the 11th-largest US market for passengers, it had a higher average fare than those above it.

As Lufthansa and United are both in Star Alliance, this is, of course, the definition of an alliance link. But it is much more than that, as those two carriers are part of a joint venture agreement and operate on a metal-neutral basis on transatlantic links. Condor, which once operated as a subsidiary of Lufthansa with the pair having a complicated history, aims to break up that coziness. Cirium Diio data shows Air India and American Airlines served the market until 2010.

In 2025, Condor lost the ability to feed Lufthansa’s flights, which meant that the carrier decided on a somewhat different network approach. It has started multiple city routes, including from FRA to Barcelona, Berlin, Budapest, Cairo, Hamburg, London Gatwick, Milan Malpensa, Munich, Paris CDG, Prague, Rome Fiumicino, Tel Aviv, Venice, Vienna, and Zurich. They exist to feed to the airline’s wider network, including to the US and Canada. ORD flights will rely on connections.

Now Has 12 Routes To The US & Canada

Let’s look ahead to next June, by which time Condor’s new ORD link will have launched. In that month, 12 routes are now scheduled from FRA to the US and Canada. Up to 69 weekly departures will be available, which means it’ll have 17% of all services between FRA and those two nations. Compared to the same month last year, Condor’s offering has risen by 11%, and it is up by 30% compared to before the pandemic in June 2019.

The airline plans three links to Canada: Calgary (four weekly), Toronto (daily), and Vancouver (up to daily). Nine routes to the US will now be available: Anchorage (three weekly), Boston (up to daily), Las Vegas (three weekly), Los Angeles (up to daily), New York JFK (daily), ORD (daily), Portland (three weekly), San Francisco (daily), and Seattle (daily).
