Moviefone: To begin with, how did you get involved in this project?

Malin Akerman: It was Jamie (Adams) who reached out himself. Later I realized that he and Brittany Snow had done a film together, so there was this happy marriage of co-stars. Of course, I asked her, “What was your experience like, and did you like it?” She’s like, “It was wild and amazing and so fun.” I had done one other project called ‘Easy’ on HBO with Joe Swanberg that was all improv, so I’d had one experience with improv, and I really enjoyed it. So, when Jamie came and asked about this, and told me about the premise and that Martin Freeman was going to be part of it, there were many levels to my interest at that point, just because I thought what a fun thing to do, improv in Wales. I’ve heard much about Jamie, just about his process, and that people have had great experiences, so I was game.

MF: Did Jamie Adams explain his unusual directing style to you before you started shooting?

MA: We spoke about the project, obviously, and I had many questions. He had sent the outline deck. I think it was about 40 pages of the scenes that we wanted to capture throughout the arc of the storyline so that I had an idea of what we were doing since there is no script. He had some suggestions of little snippets of dialogue or how it might sound or seem, just so that it would give us an idea of the characters. Then, he was super collaborative and excited to work together as a team. Obviously, it must be that way if you’re going to do an improv film in six days, but I really liked his vibe and I thought he felt secure in what he was about to do and what he was about to make. I knew that he had done a few in the past, and we had a good meeting. I mean, his system is so great, because it doesn’t cost too much to make. Actors are excited. It’s six days, one week of your time. He gets together a fun group who just, at the end of the day, we’re all artists and we want to go and do something creative, so I think it’s an easy sell. You don’t have to learn lines, which is also great because you can film for a day, and then at the end of the day you get to go and have dinner with your castmates because you don’t have to learn your lines for the next day, so the whole experience is fun.

MF: Can you talk about your approach to playing Andrea?

MA: I guess just being in the business for a long time, you meet similar characters and people, and there’s nothing wild or crazy about Andrea. She is a director, but her career hasn’t really kicked off the way she had hoped it was going to kick off. The struggle is real within the movie business, and so it’s kind of bringing that to it. She fell in love with one of the lead characters on one of her films 10 years ago, and he happened to be much younger. Again, just drawing from real life experiences of other people and what that looks like, there’s so many onset romances. Then, when you come out of those onset romances, reality hits, and it just shifts things. So, I think just being aware of that with her relationship with Josh’s character. We spoke a lot about lived experiences within this business, what that looks like, who she is, and that she’s just a very grounded character for these people. It was just a continuous discussion, but we went from the ground up of her just being quite grounded in this and quite real.

MF: What was it like improvising on set with Martin Freeman and Josh Hutcherson?

MA: I mean, they were all phenomenal. Martin Freeman, obviously, has come from this. His comedy and his comedic timing are above and beyond. He’s such a professional at this type of comedy, but everyone really was top-notch. They all stepped up their game. Everyone was ready and willing. I didn’t know Jess Weixler from before this. We’d never met or seen each other, but boy, did I ever love working with her. I think there’s a lot of thought that goes into comedy. To be that quick, I’ve noticed that with a lot of the comedians that I’ve worked with, they’re incredibly intelligent and they’re incredibly up to date on current affairs to be quick and have a witty response. I felt that way about the whole cast. I just felt like everyone was so quick and so fun to work with and so interesting. It was like summer camp. It was sad to leave.

MF: Finally, what was it like shooting on location in Wales?

MA: Well, we stayed in two different spots. Some people slept in the house that we were shooting in, and some of the crew. It was just kind of piecing it together and finding little spots that we could stay in, in Wales. We all stayed in the same places, and the green rooms were some common areas that the Airbnb had, and it was just random. But I got to say, Wales is so beautiful, the people are so lovely, and the pubs are great, so we had a good time.
