Multiple pilot salary surveys indicate that the difference between gross and net earnings at Lufthansa, as well as at some other European carriers, is among the largest at any major global airline.

This discrepancy has become increasingly important as airlines around the world compete for experienced flight crews. While Gulf and Asian carriers often attract attention for their benefits, acceptance of foreign pilots, and tax advantages, American and United continue to lead the industry in raw earning potential.

At American, Boeing 777 captains at the top of the seniority scale earn $455.96 per hour under the current Allied Pilots Association contract. Annual base compensation for 777 and 787 captains ranges from roughly $394,000 for newly qualified captains to approximately $410,000 at the highest pay scale, before profit sharing, premium flying, per diem payments, and retirement contributions are considered. The airline’s first officers are also among the best-paid in the industry, with senior 777 first officers earning nearly $300,000 annually. The airline’s latest contract also demonstrates where pilot compensation is heading. A year-12 Boeing 787 captain (a closely comparable long-haul position) currently earns more than $558,000 annually, with scheduled raises expected to push compensation close to $598,000 by early 2027, which is the highest in the world. When retirement contributions, profit-sharing programs, and premium pay opportunities are added, senior captains at both American and United can comfortably surpass half a million dollars in total annual compensation, making them the highest-paid Boeing 777 pilots anywhere in the world.

Delta Air Lines didn’t make the list because the airline retired its Boeing 777 during the pandemic. However, it is worth noting that widebody captains flying there, for example, Airbus A350, can earn between $500,000 and $750,000 annually when base salary, premium pay, profit sharing, per diem payments, and other incentives are included. Meanwhile, base salary alone often reaches $350,000—$400,000 for the most senior captains.

The good news is that foreign pilots can fly for US airlines, but the bad news is that the process is highly restrictive and requires you to have the legal right to work in the United States, as major US airlines typically do not sponsor work visas for new-hire pilots. The only major exception is the E-3 visa clause in the Australia-US free trade agreement, which grants Australian pilots unfettered access to US work visas to work for major US airlines.
