Jetstarwill inaugurate the Western Sydney Airport (WSI) on October 25 when its aircraft launch the first flight to ever depart from the new airfield. Qantas will follow with operations beginning in March 2027, according to Passenger Terminal Today.
JQ362, the first flight from the airport, located 27 miles (44 km) west of 
Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport (SYD), will be bound for the Gold Coast. Initial domestic destinations served by Jetstar will also include Melbourne and Brisbane.

Western Sydney will host around 21 flights per week flown by Jetstar when it opens its doors to travelers. The launch schedule is slated to include 14 weekly flights to Melbourne, four to the Gold Coast, and three to Brisbane. Jetstar will fly Airbus A320 single-aisle jets on their routes with a capacity of 188 passengers.
As of June 12, ticket sales have opened for both Jetstar and Qantas. Australian minister Catherine King described the anticipated opening as a project “15 years in the making.” The first services provided by Qantas will be performed by QantasLink Embraer E190 aircraft, which have a 10-seat business class and a maximum capacity of around 95 total.
The brand-new, multi-billion dollar international airport is under construction in Badgerys Creek, on the city outskirts. Before Jetstar commences the first passenger services, cargo ops are slated to take off in late July. Western Sydney Airport CEO Simon Hickey gave this comment to Passenger Terminal Today:
“These Qantas and Jetstar flights will give all of Sydney, especially Western Sydney-siders, more choice and flexibility to travel domestically, with both airlines’ services expected to grow over the years ahead, in line with demand.”

Making Flying Easier In Sydney
WSI represents Australia’s first major new airport development in over 50 years. The first stage of the new airport features a single 12,000-foot runway (3,700 m) and is equipped to handle up to 10 million passengers annually. In addition to the launch of air freight and domestic flights, the first international service to WSI will kick off in 2026. Air New Zealand will begin flights between Western Sydney and Auckland Airport (AKL) in late October 2026.
The airport is connected to the city via the also-new, toll-free M12 Motorway, which feeds into other land-side travel options, including rail. Domestic, international, and freight services will all operate out of a single, integrated terminal building. The Sydney Metro is already building a dedicated rail line as well. The long-term master plans allow expansion to a massive 82 million passengers per year by 2063.
Because SYD has a limit of 80-aircraft-movements per hour, WSI can help increase the overall capacity of the area. It will also free up more slots during the precious hours at SYD for passenger traffic by giving cargo planes an alternative destination. The new field also offers an opportunity for new carriers to break into the market and for flyers to have more flexibility with departure and arrival times when they book a trip.

Keeping Sydney’s Skies Open
One of the major reasons why WSI was constructed is to provide an alternative during the curfew hours at SYD. The strict overnight flight curfew limits capacity at Sydney’s primary field, but with WSI located on the edge of the metropolitan area, later operations are now possible. The airfield plans to be open for arrivals and departures 24 hours a day.
The greater availability of takeoff slots will help budget carriers like Jetstar offer higher departure volumes and bring down the average airfare for all airlines flying out of WSI. Over 3 million people are projected to live in Western Sydney by 2030. Residents outside of the city center will also have a more accessible option that reduces both the time and cost of commuting to the airfield.
International and domestic flights operate out of the exact same building. Thus, another benefit of the modern, yet simple, terminal is that an international traveler can walk directly to a connecting domestic flight in the same building. The terminal also features state-of-the-art bag-drop systems and curated dining options.
