5 Reasons Why Virgin Atlantic’s Upper Class Is So Highly Regarded


Virgin Atlantic (colloquially known as “Virgin”) is an airline founded in 1984 in London, England, by famous entrepreneur Richard Branson. According to their “story” on their website, Virgin Atlantic “gave people a choice. A bright red, fun, friendly, fabulous choice that made travel attainable for everyone.” However, the company does not only cater to UK-based leisure travelers, such as competitors TUI Group or Jet2 holidays. Rather, Virgin offers 3 primary onboard fare classes: Economy (Economy Light, Economy Classic, and Economy Delight), Premium, and Upper Class.

The simplicity of fare classes is reflective of their all Widebody Aircraft fleet and can be seen as a nod to fare classes within the British ocean liners (First, Second, and Third classes). The company does not offer a variance of first, business, or economy based on the geography of a route, such as per British Airways’ narrowbody vs widebody first class.

The Upper Class is firmly a traditional business class product. It is comparable to the British Airways Club Suite, United Polaris, Delta One Suite, or Air France Business. These are all lie‑flat, premium business products with privacy doors (except Polaris), similar soft‑product expectations, and similar fare structures. Upper Class is not positioned as first class, and Virgin does not operate a first‑class cabin.

The Upper Class is the airline’s full long‑haul business‑class product, offering the largest seats, the most privacy, and the most comprehensive ground experience in the cabin hierarchy. Seats convert into fully flat beds up to 6’7″ long, with 20–22 inches of width, direct aisle access, and significantly larger entertainment screens than any other cabin: up to 18.5 inches, or 32 inches in the “Retreat Suite” available on the A330neo. Passengers will receive premium bedding, upgraded headphones, wireless charging on select aircraft, and full AC/USB power. The cabin also includes priority check‑in, fast‑track security, lounge access, and the highest baggage allowance: two checked bags at 32kg each plus two carry‑ons totaling 16 kg.

What distinguishes Upper Class beyond the seat is the integrated premium ecosystem: The Clubhouse, one of the most recognized business‑class lounges; the private Upper Class Wing at Heathrow; and onboard social spaces like The Loft on the A330neo. Virgin Atlantic Flying Club members earn the highest mileage and tier‑point bonuses in this cabin, and upgrades using Virgin Points are fully supported when reward space is available. Upper Class earns high regard through five unique offerings.

Suite Hardware — A330neo

The Upper Class product can be expected to be a different offering across Virgin Atlantic’s fleet. However, as one of the younger, more modern aircraft in the fleet, the Airbus A330-900neo offers a newer, more up-to-date Upper Class experience to Virgin’s flyers. In terms of seat pitch in Upper Class, this variant wins with its 22 inches of seat width, with a 17.3‑inch inflight entertainment screen and extra storage including shoe space and multiple compartments, per Virgin’s official seat description. In contrast, the A350‑1000 Upper Class uses the Safran Cirrus NG seat, and the A330-300 and 787 use the Zodiac UCS3 herringbone seat, which, per the manufacturer’s specifications, are each inferred to only be 20 inches in seat width, as Virgin does not publish the official seat width for these variants in Upper Class.

According to a report by Turning Left for Less, the screen size for the A330 is second to the A350’s screen size. Passengers can expect the following inflight entertainment screen sizing for each model in the fleet:

The A350-1000 may beat the A330-900neo by an inch in terms of screen size, but the additional shoe space & compartments on the A330-900neo make up for the slightly smaller screen. The A350 still has solid storage space in the seat, but only with a side ledge and a footwell, according to Safran. Finally, the 787 and A330-300 offer minimal storage onboard, as they are Virgin Atlantic’s oldest Upper Class products. Overall, with the added storage space, widest seat, and solid inflight entertainment screen, the A330-900neo wins in comfort. However, the other fleet counterparts are strong choices as well. Virgin’s product is not fully standardized, but is relatively consistent across the fleet. The experience of Qatar Airways Qsuite and its A330 2-2-2 business class seat can vary widely.

The Retreat Suite

According to The Points Guy, Virgin Atlantic’s Retreat Suite is the airline’s most spacious Upper Class option, available exclusively on the A330neo. The two enlarged suites offer a fully flat 6’7″ bed, a 27‑inch screen, and space for up to four passengers to dine or socialize. Access opens only within 14 days of departure, making it a deliberately limited upgrade.

Despite being a true business-class product overall, The Retreat Suite is the exception to that generalization; it is the one extension of Virgin Atlantic’s Upper Class that could be considered a true competitor to international first class. The seat is more spacious than a traditional Upper Class seat, but still offers the same dining, service, and access to the ClubHouse and “The Loft,” as outlined below.

The Retreat Suite is also fully convertible to accommodate 4 passengers in a seating pod. Essentially, the Retreat Suite layout uses collapsible dividers and ottomans to create an open, shared space where four passengers can sit together. The configuration creates a symmetrical, face‑to‑face seating area suitable for conversation, card games, or even informal business meetings onboard.

This concept is very on-brand for the Virgin company; for instance, the Virgin Voyages Cruise Line exists in parallel to foster a friendly, social, albeit adult-only experience. In addition, onboard Upper Class, passengers can expect attentive service from the cabin crew via “a bespoke à la carte menu” and rotating selection of beverages throughout the flight. Looking Ahead — 787 Retrofit

According to Mr Plane Guy, all 787s in the Virgin Atlantic fleet are due for a full retrofit. Virgin has full support from Boeing on the development as well. With the planned retirement of the A330-300, the Upper Class product will be fully uniform across the remainder of the fleet; passengers can expect a large number of Upper Class seats and Retreat Suites available as well. It’s worth noting that Virgin and Boeing are collaborating to increase the 787 Upper Class capacity by 42%.

The reimagined fleet will see both the Upper Class and Premium cabins increase in size, offering 44 Upper Class seats and 56 Premium seats (up from 31 and 35, respectively). For the first time, the Retreat Suite will be introduced to the 787-9, with eight seats available in every Upper Class cabin.

At the time of writing, Virgin Atlantic has no active plans to order any additional aircraft types, but rather to maintain uniformity across its A330-900neo, A350-1000, and 787-9 fleets. The carrier still has 11 outstanding deliveries for the A330-900neo (of which six will serve as the replacements for the final A330-300s). Previously in service were several Boeing 747 and A340 variants. Although strikingly seen in cameos in films such as Casino Royale (2006) and Love Actually (2003), neither the 747 or the A340 have been in service at Virgin since 2020.
