Singapore Airlines Axes Airbus A380 Flights On This Major Long-Haul Route

Each week, airlines from around the world submit schedule changes to Cirium Diio, OAG, and so on. Many things may be different: the addition of new routes, eliminated markets, higher frequencies, aircraft swaps, and more. It is exciting to find something notable.

In the weekend’s update, Singapore Airlines revealed noteworthy changes to its Airbus A380 network. First, it has removed all winter services to Frankfurt Airport (FRA). Second, Melbourne Airport (MEL) will see the type then instead, although that development was disclosed last week before the schedule change was uploaded.

Currently, the Star Alliance member currently flies the 471-seat double-decker quadjet daily from Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) to FRA. The carrier’s schedule submission to Cirium shows that its superjumbos have been used on that route since 2012. They were deployed on SIN-FRA-New York JFK until 2023, becoming SIN-FRA only from then onward.

Until the latest update, the plan was for the superjumbo to run daily to Germany during winter 2026/2027, just like it has done for years. But no more. The final departure from Southeast Asia is slated for October 24, which is the penultimate day of the Northern Hemisphere’s summer based on IATA slot seasons. It comes as British Airways added back the superjumbo to its London Heathrow to SIN service.

The A380 has been replaced by the 264-seat Boeing 777-300ER. The downgauge means that seats for sale have fallen by 44%, although the 777-300ER has more freight capacity than the A380. When Singapore Airlines’ other FRA flights are included, the carrier’s overall capacity has only fallen by 14%. This comes as the war in Iran continues, and some people remain uneasy about connecting at Gulf hubs. Depending on their itinerary, they may prefer to fly via Southeast Asia instead, which is partly why Singapore Airlines recently added flights on multiple European routes.

The removal of the A380 to FRA appears to be only for the winter. For now, the type will return on March 28, 2027, which is the first day of the aviation summer season based on IATA slots. It will, as usual, operate daily, with the following schedule.

The carrier has a long history of flying the double-decker quadjet to the capital of Victoria. It was flown to MEL between 2009 and 2020 and returned in 2023 for a few months. After not being used in 2024 or 2025, the equipment was once again deployed from the end of March 2026.

This superjumbo’s return to MEL was not previously planned, as the schedule originally called for the A380 to be flown to Dubai instead. By pulling the 471-seater from that route, the freed-up equipment was redeployed to Victoria instead.

Until the weekend’s schedule update, the A380’s final departure from SIN to MEL was down for October 24, 2026. However, the airline has now confirmed it’ll operate during the northern winter.

Two things are interesting. First, it would be easy to conclude that this development is because the A380 will not fly to FRA during the winter, although more frames are needed for that route than the much shorter service to MEL. Second, when writing, A380 flights to Dubai are still scheduled for the winter. Is the type being removed from that route? That might explain the extension of flights to MEL.

Singapore Airlines’ A380 Operations In The Upcoming Winter

Between October 25, 2026, and March 27, 2027, Singapore Airlines plans 1,456 departures on the A380 from its SIN hub, with nine to ten daily outbound services. Its offering has risen from 1,131 departures, or a considerable 29%, from the equivalent period in the northern winter of 2025/2026.

Shorter routes are part of the reason, with the average superjumbo stage length falling from 3,899 nautical miles (7,221 km) last winter to 3,536 nautical miles (6,549 km) in the upcoming northern winter. That’s a drop of nearly a tenth. It is influenced by A380 services to Dubai and Melbourne, with the type also going to Auckland, Delhi, London Heathrow, Mumbai, Shanghai Pudong, and Sydney. It remains to be seen if superjumbo flights are removed from its route to the UAE.
