Netflix misspells a lead Devil May Cry character’s name and has to recall official merchandise

They say the Devil is in the details, but it seems someone missed that memo, as Netflix has had to remove a Devil May Cry T-shirt from its official storefront, after misspelling Vergil’s name.

The first season of Netflix’s Devil May Cry animated series, which is based on Capcom’s games of the same name, arrived on the service in April last year. It was enough of a hit that a second Devil May Cry season was given the greenlight just a week after the first season debuted. However, there were those who felt Netflix hadn’t done some of the Devil May Cry characters justice in the show and didn’t understand the source material.

Netflix probably hasn’t done itself any favours boosting confidence within certain Devil May Cry circles by advertising and then quickly yoinking a T-shirt from sale that misspelled the name of one of the series’ main characters.

The T-shirt in question displays artwork of Devil May Cry’s lead character Dante alongside an image of his brother – and franchise antagonist – Vergil. The two characters’ names are written on the shirt, except Vergil’s name has been spelled ‘Virgil’. This is official merchandise from Netflix.

The company evidently realised its error and quickly removed the T-shirt from the Netflix store. But because the internet sees everything, evidence of the spelling slip is now out there. Devil May Cry fan @vergildearest was upset on X and exclaimed, “THEY SPELLED HIS NAME WRONG ON THIS OFFICIAL SHIRT BROTHER WHAT.” @ShinEyeZehUhh added, “Netflix spelling Vergil’s name wrong on official Devil May Cry merch about sums everything up.”

Despite what some others thought, we here at Eurogamer were rather taken by the first season of Netflix’s Devil May Cry series. “Netflix’s long-gestating animated adaptation of Capcom’s venerable hack-em-up gives Dante his blockbuster action hero moment,” reads Eurogamer’s four star review of season one.

The second season of Devil May Cry is out now on Netflix.
