We’ve personally tested and researched dozens of nontoxic lip balms — these are our editors’ top picks for safe, clean, and hydrating options at a range of price points.

Lip balm is a must-have beauty product for us. No matter the occasion, we’ve always got a tube, stick, or tin in our bag for quick on-the-go lip hydration. Fortunately, brands have come a long way from those glittery, scent-heavy, drying chapsticks we used to use — remember those? — but it’s still important to choose products wisely. The wrong ingredients can strip the skin barrier and create an artificial layer over the lips, trapping moisture and actually leading to more dryness, not less. And that’s not the only reason you should care about what’s inside your lip balm.

Why use a natural and organic lip balm?

Because the skin cells on the lips are thin, ingredients are absorbed more quickly than in other parts of the body — and they’re much more likely to enter the mouth, too. In a 2025 study, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration found “forever chemicals” known as PFAS in 1,700 cosmetic products. These chemicals don’t break down and can cause major health issues, like cancer risk and immune system suppression. Foundation, mascara, and eye and lip products contained the highest indicators of PFAS, even when they weren’t listed as ingredients. In 2026, a Danish study found that one in four lip balms it tested contained “problematic” chemicals.

Beyond the health aspects, many lip balms use highly processed petroleum derived from fossil fuels to occlude (form a protective barrier over) your lips, rather than adding moisture. And they can also contain other non-eco-friendly ingredients like synthetic additives, parabens, and non-biodegradable materials. So we’ve rounded up the best nontoxic lip balms that 1) use sustainable, natural ingredients and 2) hydrate and protect your skin.

Our criteria:

1. Primally Pure

Best For | Dry, chapped lips
Ingredients | Grass-fed tallow, beeswax, coconut oil, cocoa butter, mango butter
Price | $6 for 0.15 oz of the Lip Balm

Founded by Bethany McDaniel, Primally Pure makes its products sustainably in SoCal (with some ingredients coming from the company’s regenerative farm!). The brand uses animal and plant-based ingredients and is especially famous for its luxurious tallow-based products — like the bestselling Lip Balm, which also includes coconut oil for anti-inflammatory benefits, beeswax for moisture retention, and cocoa and mango butters for antioxidant protection. It’s specifically designed to nourish chapped lips and offer a protective, anti-inflammatory shield that lasts for hours. And you don’t have to limit application to just your lips: the product is safe to use around your eyes, cuticles, and anywhere you have dry skin. The balm was one of their earliest product offerings when the company started a decade ago and now comes in five flavors (cocoa, creamsicle, grapefruit, lavender, and peppermint). Primally Pure also offers a Sun Lip Balm with SPF 15 as well as a buildable pink Rose + Mint Tinted Lip Balm. When you’re done with your products, the brand’s partnership with Pact lets you mail back your empties to be repurposed.

Customer Review | “I have tried more non-toxic lip balms than I care to admit, but this one is far superior to all others! I especially love the Creamsicle flavor!” – Shauna B. (Read all reviews.)

2. cocokind

Best For | Skin barrier support
Ingredients | Lip Blur Balm: Ceramide complex, tri-peptide, glycerin, kiss-me-quick-flower / Mymatcha: Organic coconut oil, organic matcha tea powder, organic shea butter, sunflower seed oil
Price | $12 for 0.3 oz of the Ceramide Lip Blur Balm / $9 for 0.5 oz of the Mymatcha All-over Moisture Stick

The experts at “botanical-forward skincare” brand cocokind do tons of research into their own products — and they share their sustainability stats right on their packaging. Fans of the brand particularly love the bestselling Ceramide Lip Blur Balm, especially since the brand took time to perfect the formula instead of rushing it to production. With ceramides and peptides for hydration and barrier support — the brand’s two major focuses — the balm also uses glycerides for hydration and the “Kiss-Me-Quick-Flower” (portulaca pilosa) to protect against environmental stress. For a balm that’s free of essential oils, the colors are impressively bright and high-impact. Alternatively, if you’re looking for a vegan, colorless option, the Mymatcha All-over Moisture Stick is hydrating and soothing. Matcha has antioxidant properties that can keep your skin protected against the elements; the moisture stick uses organic matcha tea powder sourced from Japan that’s rich in caffeine, as well as organic coconut oil and organic shea butter to nourish lips and under the eyes.

Customer Review | “I enjoy the light consistency of this lip balm compared to other expensive brands that utilize a lot of waxes to make the product thick. Personally, I use clear overnight and I wake up with plump and moisturized lips! I also took my balm traveling and am thrilled with the key ring at the top for easy access and reapplication.” – Belle C. (Read all reviews.)

It’s an award-winning recipe, including a spot in the 2024 and 2025 Allure Best of Beauty Awards. The brand’s bestselling Lip Balm flavors include pomegranate peach, island coconut, and sweet mint, but there are tons more to choose from. Plus, the fact that it’s vegan, plastic-free, and natural is pretty impressive for the $6 price tag. 5. RMS Beauty

6. YISE Beauty

Best For | Multi-use hydration
Ingredients | Hyaluronic acid, shea butter, coconut oil, vitamin E, jojoba seed oil
Price | $38 for 0.42 oz of Like a Gloss

Model-actor-entrepreneur Molly Sims wanted to make skincare easier and better for women tackling skin challenges as they aged. So, she created YISE Beauty (pronounced “wise”) in 2023. Their multi-functional formulas are designed to reduce steps in your skincare routine without losing results; already, the brand’s been recognized as a 2025 Skincare Winner by the Allure Best of Beauty Awards as well as by the ELLE’s 2025 Future of Beauty Awards. And, on top of that, it’s Leaping Bunny certified, free of parabens and phthalates, and transparent about ingredients. YISE’s Like a Gloss lip treatment is triple effective: it restores like a mask, nourishes like a balm, and shines like a gloss. It works when applied over lipstick or overnight for some extra hydration, and it’s especially useful in the drying winter months. Hyaluronic acid smooths, shea butter and coconut oil moisturize, and vitamin E and jojoba oil offer antioxidant protection. The light white tea scent is delicate, not distracting.

Customer Review | “This is it. I’ve tried so many lip balms and masks, but nothing has compared to YSE. The texture is just so buttery and makes my lips feel soft and pillowy. So nourishing. I usually apply before bed or during the day; I just add a thin layer on top of my favorite lip color for extra moisture. Oh and the packaging is stunning.” – Juliet G. (Read all reviews.)

7. OSEA

Best For | Lip wrinkles and lines
Ingredients | Bidens pilosa plant, passion fruit oil, sodium hyaluronate, undaria seaweed, sunflower seed oil, sesame seed extract, castor seed oil
Price | $28 for 0.6 oz of the Dream Lip Mask

OSEA stands for “Ocean, Sun, Earth, Atmosphere.” Vegan and cruelty-free, the brand makes products with seaweed because of its rich nutrients and minerals (and also because it’s an abundant, sustainable resource). The brand’s Dream Lip Mask uses Undaria seaweed and a bio-retinol from the bidens pilosa plant (a.k.a. black-jack) to tackle lip lines and dryness. The passion fruit oil gives a gorgeous, delicate scent while nourishing and conditioning, and the sodium hyaluronate plumps and smooths. Founder Jenefer Palmer says she was trying to fill a gap in the market: a lip mask that would address dryness and signs of aging on a deeper level. These naturally derived ingredients aren’t harsh, unlike stronger retinols that might cause redness and chapped lips. Instead, the mask works like a “restorative cocoon,” locking in hydration and softness overnight. The soft jelly-like texture isn’t sticky and, better yet, doesn’t leave a residue.

Customer Review | “Highly recommend this product. I live in Arizona and my lips tend to get chapped a lot. Not anymore! This stuff is AMAZING! I dab some on at night before bed and wake up with the softest lips, and they stay that way throughout the majority of the following day. I reapply during the day once in a while, just because I love the feel. Don’t miss out! Get yours. You won’t regret it.” – Veronica D. (Read all reviews.)

8. CLEARSTEM

Best For | Upper lip acne
Ingredients | Safflower oil, castor oil, raspberry seed oil, green tea leaf extract, orange peel oil, peptides, vitamin E
Price | $24 for 0.5 fl oz of LIPS&CUTES

As the name implies, CLEARSTEM uses stem cells to make skincare that’s clean, non-comedogenic, and anti-aging. They also avoid ingredients like benzoyl peroxide, phthalates, parabens, and formaldehyde. The brand is so committed to helping their consumers that they have a skincare learning center and even a free pore-clogging checker you can use to see if an ingredient in your beauty routine might be affecting your skin. The brand’s LIPS&CUTES is a soft lip and cuticle treatment with peptides, vitamin E, and green tea for collagen production, environmental protection, and calmer and brighter skin, respectively. The product is specifically helpful if you get breakouts around your lips, but the silky and airy texture means it also works well for people who want a lightweight lip formula (and anyone who wants to freshen up their cuticles — it works really well after a manicure, apparently). Basically, if you’ve got sensitive or reactive skin, take note of this one.

Best For | Sensitive skin
Ingredients | Olive oil, coconut oil, cocoa seed butter, candelilla wax, rosemary leaf extract

The best part of shopping there: they’re focused on being ethically-minded, and they give back to the communities they serve. The brand’s Vegan Lip Balm comes in some extremely luxe flavors: coconut cacao, sweet orange tangerine, rosemary eucalyptus, and peppermint clove. Each is designed as a little dose of mood-boosting aromatherapy — rosemary for respiratory and itch relief and sweet orange as a mood booster, for example. You can use it on your lips, of course, but for a stronger dose of scent, rub it directly under your nostrils. The balm’s multipurpose — you don’t have to buy a separate product for the rest of your body — so you can use it on any of your dry skin.
