Our editors have researched and decorated their homes with nontoxic furniture and rugs for years. These are their favorite runner rugs that are finished without harmful chemicals.

There’s something so grounding about runner rugs. They have a clear purpose for protecting your floors and cushioning your feet, but they also provide decor for your floor. The most stylish runners serve as thoughtfully placed accents for hallways, in the kitchen, or even at the end or sides of your bed.

These are generally rectangular in shape and available in a range of widths and lengths, though the most common sizes are 2.5 by 7, 10, or 12 feet. Of course, we made sure to prioritize products with sustainably sourced materials and production practices to narrow it down to our favorite runner rugs.

Why should you consider a nontoxic rug?

It’s easy to think you only need nontoxic materials for products you (and your loved ones) come in direct contact with, like bed sheets or towels. But don’t forget about your feet! Rugs are often made with harmful chemicals like VOCs, glues, and flame retardants, which can unsuspectingly emit into your home. To further protect your space, we encourage nontoxic rugs for a more natural, chemical-free atmosphere in your space.

Our criteria:

  • NATURAL/NONTOXIC | Bye, bye, chemicals! We only recommend products made by brands promoting nontoxic, non-hazardous materials. Some of our favorites comprise responsibly sourced wool, jute, and organic cotton.
  • EASY TO CLEAN | Spills happen, especially in messier areas like your kitchen. That’s why we’re partial to machine-washable rugs, which you can conveniently toss in the wash if spot-cleaning doesn’t do the trick.
  • DURABILITY | These are investment pieces, and they should last you a while—even if they experience a lot of foot traffic. We sought out reviews confirming the strength and durability of these products.

Need to ground your space even more? We have an entire guide to the best nontoxic rugs, plus roundups of our favorite jute and wool rugs.

1. Revival

Best For | Jute rugs
Materials | 100% natural jute
Price | $269

Sourcing inspiration and materials from Turkey, the home country of one of their co-founders, Revival started to provide people with affordable rugs that don’t compromise on quality. Tired of overpriced home goods, they traveled to Turkey and networked with artisans and collectors to create “handwoven, one-of-a-kind pieces.” Revival works directly with their suppliers, skipping the traditional wholesale and retail markups that lead to significantly higher price tags. The brand adds that they rely on waste-conscious technologies in their production process to support the environment and local communities.

Their jute collection is particularly noteworthy, and the Hart runner rug is made in India with 100% natural jute. Choose between the unbleached original colorway and one of five dyed rugs. The jute rugs are spot clean only, but there’s an entire section on the Revival website dedicated to washable and “easy care” rugs. There are uniquely patterned designs you can throw in the wash, and even a rug the brand says is just as cozy as your favorite sweatshirt.

Customer Review | “The rug is perfect. Arrived earlier than expected and looks exactly like the photographs. I have it in my kitchen and am looking to buy another rug from the same Company. It feels good to walk on and the color and size are perfect! I love it and have no regrets!! Good value and well constructed.” – Cheryl J. (Read all reviews.)

2. Lorena Canals

Best For | Responsibly sourced wood
Materials | 100% wool, recycled cotton
Price | $459

The eponymous brand of innovative founder Lorena Canals introduced the first-ever washable rug to the market. Originally running the business out of her garage in 1998, the entrepreneur now has a factory in India and offices located in hubs all over the world. Leaning into all things natural and sustainable, Lorena Canals uses natural dyes and highlights the genuine colors of the fibers they source.

There’s a lot to love about the brand’s responsibly sourced wool, a biodegradable and renewable material. All of their wool products are Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) certified, which prioritizes animal welfare, land management, and more. The Wool Runner Rug is an example of their best work, made with non-dyed wool and featuring a modern checkered pattern. In line with the rugs that made history, the patented WOOLABLE design makes them machine-washable and lighter in weight than most wool rugs on the market. Another reason to support Lorena Canals: They created the Sakûla Project, a nursery school in India that provides free food and education to 120 children in need.

3. Ruggable

Best For | Easy care instructions
Materials | 100% polyester top
Price | $239

Founder Jeneva Bell set out to create beautiful home goods with lived-in comfort and style. She patented her two-piece, machine-washable rug design, and Ruggable disrupted the industry with these coveted pieces with easy care instructions. Since that first patent, they’ve also developed an all-in-one system, complete with a non-slip backing. The original two-piece option requires a non-slip rug pad, which will come with your first rug cover purchase. After that initial purchase, you can buy rug pads separately.

Ruggable is known for best-selling designer collaborations. Take the Lyonna Natural Tufted Rug, which they created in partnership with Anthropologie Home. The tufted runner rug is machine washable and made in two colorways to show an authentically heirloom-quality item. Jonathan Adler and Kathy and Nicky Hilton have also designed collections with Ruggable, and each one showcases their own style combined with the convenience of the rug brand’s iconic designs.

4. Nordic Knots

Best For | Minimalist designs
Materials | 100% wool
Price | $395

Ten years ago, Nordic Knots began to shift the focus from trends to long-lasting staples. The certified B Corp offers Scandinavian designs from their Stockholm atelier, and each product is handcrafted in India. The company is proud to be GoodWeave certified, meaning their rugs are exclusively made by adults under fair working conditions. The majority of their goods are made with natural fibers, which is yet another effort toward a more sustainable future.

The popular Tradition Solid Runner comes in eight colorways and patterns, and three different runner sizes (2.5 by 9, 12, or 16 feet). We’re drawn to the all-green color, which is a more unique, grounded take on a classic neutral. Earthy and dynamic, it can find its home in virtually any hallway. Nordic Knots notes that the items in the Tradition collection are limited, since they’re handmade in small batches. So if you find something from the brand that you love, it’s best to act fast.

5. CICIL

Best For | Locally made rugs
Materials | 72% wool, 28% jute
Price | $549

Women-founded and operated company CICIL keeps materials and production close to home. After all, they recognize that their products are personal and used by everyone in your family (furry relatives included!). Their wool fibers come from farms on the East Coast, and all rugs are made in a third-generation textile mill located in North Carolina. Like most good things, especially those from such an eco-conscious brand, each order requires some patience. CICIL’s rugs are handsewn and made to order, and the average lead time ranges from three to six weeks.

While most runners are the standard rectangular shape, we love how the Curvy Runner makes a statement. The wavy edges give more movement to your space, and there are a whopping 14 colors to choose from. Plus, if one of the sizes doesn’t work for your space, you can order custom dimensions. A blend of 100% East Coast wool yarn and jute, consider it the ultimate nontoxic rug combination.

6. Quince

Best For | Affordable price points
Materials | 100% New Zealand wool
Price | $200

It’s rare to find an online retailer that sells everything from sweaters to runner rugs, while also promising quality and sustainability. Quince delivers with their nontraditional supply chain that cuts out costs from “sourcing agents, warehousing, wholesaling, distribution, and storefront retail.” The result? Surprisingly affordable products that are durable and made with natural materials like alpaca wool and organic linen and eco-friendly dyes.

If we had to pick favorites, it would be the Troy Hand-Knotted Wool Rug, comprising 100% New Zealand wool and hand-knotted by artisans in India. The brand also notes that this $200 is less than half the price of similar options from other retailers. Just make sure to add a rug pad to your cart to complete your system. Quince offers free shipping and accepts returns with a $35 restocking fee within 365 days (as long as the product is new and unused).

Customer Review | “Love love this new rug. It’s very soft and the wool is durable. There is depth to the design and layers making dog hair and dirt hard to see!” – Brittany L. (Read more reviews.)
