We’ve spent years testing and researching the best sustainable bath and beach towels. These are our favorite Turkish towels that are organic, made to last, and affordable, too.
If you’re looking for towels as versatile as they are functional, you might want to consider Turkish towels. Known for being lightweight, super absorbent, and quick-to-dry, Turkish towels are perfect for a day at the beach, a quick dip in the pool, for your bathroom — or anywhere in between. They’re great for tucking in your bag on the go and forgetting they’re there until you need them. 🙂
What are Turkish towels?
Turkish towels are flat-woven towels that don’t have loops; instead, they are woven flat using traditional looms. They’re lightweight, sand-resistant, absorbent, and quick-drying because of the long staple Turkish cotton they’re often made from. Some more modern Turkish towels use other types of cotton with similar properties. Traditionally, Turkish towels were used in hammams (Turkish bath houses) and featured a striped design with tassels on the ends. They’re known for getting softer with use and washing, and they are great for baths, beaches, spas, and the outdoors.
What to consider when shopping for Turkish towels:
When shopping for Turkish towels, it’s important to think about what matters most to you in terms of comfort and certifications. Do you like a fluffier towel? Traditionally, Turkish towels aren’t as fluffy, but there are a few options on this list with a less traditional approach to the Turkish weave. By contrast, if you’re looking for something that dries quickly, feels soft, and gets the job done (and done well), a more traditional Turkish towel is a great choice.
In terms of certifications, we like to look for those that ensure materials in the towels are sustainably sourced and ethically manufactured, and are made without any toxic chemicals that could be harmful to you or the environment. Here are a few common certifications for Turkish towels to look for:
- GOTS Certified Cotton: The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) verifies that cotton is processed in environmentally and socially responsible ways, and that it’s truly organic.
- OEKO-TEX: This certification for textiles ensures fabrics are guaranteed to be free from harmful levels of over 100 toxic substances and chemicals, including formaldehyde, pesticides, and heavy metals.
- Fair Trade: To be certified Fair Trade, a company must display safe working practices, fair compensation, and environmental protection for farmers, workers, and employees.
How to wash Turkish towels:
While many of the Turkish towels on this list are pre-washed, the general recommendation for Turkish towels is to pre-wash them before you use them. This is because the “natural cotton fibers contain oils that prevent full absorbency at first,” according to Wet Cat. “Break in” your towel by soaking it in cold water for several hours (around 4), washing it on cold, and hanging it to dry.
For all washes after the pre-wash, machine wash cold (or at the very most, warm; never hot) with similar colors. Generally, using fabric softeners or harsh laundry detergents can affect the absorbency of the cotton over time, so it’s best to stick to a milder, nontoxic detergent. Hang to dry, or if you want to throw them in the dryer, make sure it’s on low heat and tumble dry.

4. Oddbird
Best for | Handwoven towels
Materials | 100% cotton
Price for one towel | $65
Ceren Alkaç-Lee, a Turkey native who now lives in Los Angeles, founded Oddbird in 2016. The brand creates small-batch, handcrafted pieces made on traditional 100-year-old shuttle looms in Turkey. Everything is made in small batches – a direct response and contrast to fast fashion, which puts out over twenty collections a year. The Turkish towels from Oddbird are handmade, small batch, and come in limited edition batches. The towels get softer and more absorbent with each wash, and they’re great for bathing, the beach, or even used as a breastfeeding cover or shawl. Oddbird washes all of its handwoven textiles in a traditional Turkish soap – with their signature scent – right off the loom, and it removes any natural allergens from the weaving process. They recommend “breaking in” your towel by pre-soaking them in cold water for 4-6 hours, followed by washing them in cold water and hanging to dry.
Customer Review | “Can’t say enough good things about these Turkish towels. They are clearly lovingly crafted and thoughtfully packaged, the towels themselves are huge and beautiful. I followed the directions for a pre-soak and these towels are amazing – thin but super absorbent and quick drying, and so much comfier than your standard towels.” – Candace G. [Read more reviews.]

Wet Cat is all about keeping you dry. The name actually comes from exactly that — helping you get dry when you’re wet… and cats because cats are soft (like their towels). The brother- and sister-founded brand is inspired by the summers the two of them spent in Turkey growing up. They wanted to bring authentic Turkish towels to everyone in the world. They stock several different Turkish towels: from the Original (with or without tassels!) to those with funky patterns and designs, like this tie-dye one, for instance. The towels come in lots of colors and are available in a regular or XL. They’re all made from 100% pure, non-GMO Turkish cotton and are OEKO-TEX certified to verify they are made free from toxic and harmful chemicals. They’re also prewashed and preshrunk, so you won’t have any surprises the first time you wash them. Wet Cat gives back, too: 5% of every purchase goes to LA-based pet rescues.
Customer Review | “We have converted all of our beach towels at our island house to WetCat. We love that they take up so little space in the beach bag, don’t catch sand, absorb well, and dry fast.
