$60,000 reward in search for man who allegedly shot 2 Virginia sheriff’s deputies, killing 1

As the search continued on Sunday for a man who allegedly shot two Virginia sheriff’s deputies, one fatally, the FBI and U.S. Marshals Service offered a combined $60,000 reward for information leading to the capture of the suspect.

The FBI field office in Richmond announced on Sunday that it is offering a $50,000 reward on top of the $10,000 that the U.S. Marshals Service offered on Saturday for information leading to the location and arrest of 55-year-old Michael Timothy Puckett.

“Puckett should be considered armed and extremely dangerous,” Carroll County, Virginia, Sheriff Kevin A. Kemp said in a statement. “Anyone who sees him or has information regarding his whereabouts is urged not to approach him and to immediately call 911.”

A $10,000 reward is being offered in the search for Michael Puckett, who is suspected of shooting two Virginia sheriff’s deputies, one fatally, in Richmond, Virginia, May 29, 2026.

Carroll County Sheriff’s Office

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office identified Deputy Logan Utt, a military veteran and a member of the agency since 2023, as the deputy who was killed in the shooting on Friday night at a home near Richmond.

Utt and another sheriff’s deputy were sent to the home around 9:26 p.m. local time to conduct a welfare check when they came in contact with Puckett, who allegedly opened fire on them, Kemp said.

Investigators probe the scene of a shooting, May 29, 2026, in Richmond, Virginia, that left one Carroll County Sheriff’s Deputy dead and another injured.

The deputies returned fire as Puckett allegedly fled the scene, Kemp said.

A motive for the shooting remains under investigation, Kemp said.

Michael Timothy Puckett, suspected of shooting two Carroll County Sheriff’s deputies, killing one, was spotted on a wildlife game camera in Surry County, North Carolina, early Sunday morning, north of Mount Airy, North Carolina, police said.

Wytheville Police Department

The search for Puckett expanded to North Carolina after the fugitive was spotted around 6:56 a.m. ET on a wildlife game camera in Surry County, North Carolina, north of Mount Airy, the Wytheville, N.C., Police Department said in a statement on Facebook.

Kemp called Utt a “hero,” whose “lifelong dream” was to become a sheriff’s deputy.

“Deputy Utt was a devoted husband, loving father, cherished family member, friend, and respected member of our law enforcement family. His service, courage, and dedication will not be forgotten,” Kemp said.
