53 Days to the World Cup: The players who have scored the most with their head

It takes special skill to score off a header in the FIFA World Cup, and even more to do it several times.

In a list of goalscorers who used their heads to find the back of the net, one player, German striker Miroslav Klose, rose above all the others — literally, in this case. Klose,  who played across four World Cups from 2002 to 2014, scored seven of his 16 total World Cup goals with his head.

Klose, sitting third in World Cup appearances with 24 games, also holds the record for the most World Cup goals scored.

Just below him is another German, forward Gerd Müller, who scored five goals with his head across half as many tournaments as Klose.

And in a cluster of players with four headed goals, fans of the U.S. men’s national team might notice a familiar face — former USMNT manager Jürgen Klinsmann, who picked up 11 total World Cup goals as a forward for Germany and scored four of those with his head.

The full list of the players with the most headed goals:

1. Miroslav Klose, Germany — 7 goals off headers (2002, 2006, 2010, 2014)
2. Gerd Müller, Germany — 5 goals (1970, 1974)
T3. Sándor Kocsis, Hungary — 4 goals (1954)
T3. Tomáš Skuhravý, Czechia — 4 goals (1990)
T3. Oldřich Nejedlý, Czechia — 4 goals (1934, 1938)
T3. Andrzej Szarmach, Poland — 4 goals (1974, 1978, 1982)
