American Airlines has been making several adjustments to its network in recent months, adding new routes in some markets while scaling back others. Just recently, as Simple Flying reported, the carrier launched nine new routes in a single day. Now, the airline has made another network change, ending flights between Philadelphia and Doha, its longest-ever route from the Pennsylvania hub.
The route was suspended in March amid increased geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and had been expected to return early next year. However, the airline has now removed all future Philadelphia-Doha flights from sale. With American no longer planning to operate the route, its close oneworld partner, Qatar Airways, is reportedly considering a return to Philadelphia.
American Will Not Return To Doha
The Dallas-Fort Worth-based carrier first launched flights to Doha in 2022. The service came just a few years after American and Qatar Airways repaired a relationship that had deteriorated during a wider dispute between major US and Gulf carriers. American ended its codeshare agreement with Qatar in 2017, arguing that Gulf airlines benefited from unfair subsidies (though Qatar Airways repeatedly rejected this allegation). The carriers renewed their partnership in 2020, ending a rift that had lasted several years.
The airline initially operated one daily flight from New York John F. Kennedy International Airport. A year later, the service was transferred to its Philadelphia hub. Notably, the route became the longest ever operated from the Pennsylvania gateway, covering approximately 6,798 miles (10,940 km) with a scheduled flight time of around 14.5 hours. Earlier in March, American suspended the route due to the ongoing war in the region. At the time, the service remained in its schedule and was expected to return in January 2027. But the airline has now removed the route from sale.

Qatar Airways Is Eyeing A Return To Philadelphia
Indeed, American’s exit leaves a notable gap in the Philadelphia market. The route generated substantial traffic over the years. When American launched the service from Philadelphia in 2023, it carried around 31,000 round-trip passengers. That figure increased to 187,000 in 2024 and reached 169,000 in 2025, with load factors remaining above 85% throughout the period. The route was not only carrying passengers traveling between Philadelphia and Doha, but also those connecting through Qatar Airways’ hub to dozens of destinations across the Middle East, Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.
However, the service may not be gone for long.
Qatar Airways is reportedly considering a return to Philadelphia. The airline has not officially announced any plans to resume the route. However, aviation tracker Ishrion Aviation recently reported that Qatar Airways has started recruiting for several positions at
Philadelphia International Airport. The Qatari flag carrier is no stranger to the market.
The airline launched flights between Doha and Philadelphia in 2014, shortly after joining the
oneworld alliance, and continued serving the route until 2023. During its time in the market, the carrier carried roughly 1.4 million passengers. Load factors averaged 71.5% across the period, though as noted above, performance on the route improved considerably in later years. This suggests that there is still a sizable market for nonstop flights between Philadelphia and Doha, and a return would therefore make strategic sense for Qatar Airways.

American Is Still Expanding From Philadelphia
Furthermore, even as it exits the Doha market, American continues to expand its international network from Philadelphia. In recent years, the airline has launched multiple routes, especially routes to secondary European cities that would be difficult to support from some of its larger hubs. For instance, for the summer 2027, it plans to launch flights between Philadelphia and Porto, Portugal.
The route will be operated daily using the Airbus A321XLR. The carrier has also continued expanding its Central European network from the airport. Just last month, it launched summer seasonal nonstop flights to Budapest and Prague using its Boeing 787-8 fleet. Looking ahead, the airline is expected to announce additional routes from Philadelphia for summer 2027.
