This handy little camera earned a 9.0 rating from CNET Senior Editor Tyler Lacoma, our expert on home security and smart home tech. He praised its ease of use, effectiveness and customization options; his only negative against it was the price. At this discounted price of $269 instead of the usual $349, that’s much less of an issue.

Thermal Master P3 thermal camera

This thermal camera has a high-quality design, plugs into your phone effortlessly and supports both iPhones and Android phones. It also has a 25Hz refresh rate and the ability to detect anywhere between -4 degrees and 1,112 degrees Fahrenheit. In his review, Lacoma found it to have effective heat mapping and pinpoint temperature measurement. It can also zoom in and isolate areas for more focused analysis.

In Lacoma’s testing, he found the thermal camera to be effective at detecting hidden cameras, insulation issues, water leaks and more. It has a ton of customization options, too — even a birdwatching mode. It also comes with a secure case for travel or storage. Note, however, that this device does struggle with accuracy near reflective, metallic surfaces.

This useful tool can handle a lot, which makes this a great investment for most people. His final verdict was that “while a phone add-on like this may not be for everyone, I’m confident anyone could use it, with setup taking only minutes and results useful in numerous situations. Pros and more serious amateurs also have access to a wealth of adjustment and custom modes they can use for deeper analysis.”

Prefer a stand-alone thermal camera? You can also use that same code to save 10% on this Thor model from the same brand. Note that you’ll have to apply the code THERMCAM10 at checkout to get the discounted price.
