Women’s T20 Asia Cup – Gull Feroza penalised for showing dissent during game against Hong Kong

Gull Feroza, the Pakistan top-order batter, has been fined 10% of her match fee and had a demerit point added to her disciplinary record for expressing dissent at the on-field umpire’s decision to give her out lbw in the Women’s T20 Asia Cup game against Hong Kong in Dubai on Monday.

It was the fifth over of Pakistan’s innings after they had opted to bat, and Feroza got down to sweep a tossed-up delivery from left-arm wristspinner Kary Chan, appeared to miss, and the ball hit her pad in front of the stumps.

The on-field decision was out, and with no DRS in use in the tournament, Feroza had to go. On her way, as the ICC put it, she “showed dissent towards the on-field umpire’s decision by gesturing to her bat to indicate she had got an edge”.

This was in breach of Article 2.8 of the ICC’s code of conduct for players.

It was Feroza’s second offence within a 24-month period, bringing her total to two demerit points in that window.

Feroza became the second Pakistan player to be pulled up for a breach of the code of conduct during the Asia Cup after her captain Fatima Sana, who was also fined 10% of her match fee and got one demerit point for her send-off to Shafali Verma during the match against India on Saturday.

The incident in question took place in the second over of India’s chase of Pakistan’s 55, when Shafali popped a catch back to Sana, the bowler. Sana gestured in the direction of the pavilion as she celebrated, inviting the attention from the officials.

The win over Hong Kong, by 72 runs, made Pakistan the second team to make the semi-finals from Group A. They will now play Sri Lanka in the second semi-final, on Friday, with Bangladesh and India facing off in the first, on Thursday.
