Entering his first NBA season, Washington Wizards rookie AJ Dybantsa has the utmost confidence and revealed how Hall of Fame guard Dwyane Wade challenged his career goal. The expectations for Dybantsa and the 2026-27 Wizards are somewhat high compared to previous seasons as future Hall of Fame center Anthony Davis and four-time All-Star Trae Young will lead Washington into a new era.

For Dybantsa, reaching the Hall of Fame was the ultimate goal until Wade challenged it, he said, per The Athletic’s David Aldridge.

“I was like, ‘I want to be a Hall of Famer. If I have a Hall of Fame speech, my career is set. I did all I needed to do,'” Dybantsa recalled. “He was like, why not go bigger? I’m like, what is bigger than the Hall of Fame? He’s like, he had the same goal when he was playing basketball until the [NBA’s] 75th anniversary, and he was called up with all those guys, [with] Michael Jordan. He was like, that was the [new] goal. So he told me, I don’t know what it is, it’s like 19 years from now. It’ll be the 100th anniversary.

“So he’s like, ‘When they call the 100, you need to be in that top 100.'”

After Dwyane Wade was named to the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team in 2021, he was enshired to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2023. The three-time NBA champion giving Wizards rookie AJ Dybantsa advice is fitting for a former player who captured his first title in only his third season. Wade is revered as one of the best guards of his era.
