Following its launch last November, I spent several weeks testing Withings’ BeamO, a three-in-one, FDA-cleared device that functions as a stethoscope, an electrocardiogram and a thermometer. One of my takeaways was that while the device is great for measuring your temperature and listening to your heart and lungs, these readings require a doctor for interpretation. But that will soon change.
On Friday, at IFA 2026, Withings announced StethO Sense, a service that will be available to Withings+ users starting Oct. 1. It uses third-party AI analysis software to analyze BeamO’s heart and lung recordings. According to a statement, it uses eMurmur Heart AI to detect abnormal heart murmurs and StethoMe to provide insights into breathing sounds.
“StethO Sense lets families record heart sounds at home, in seconds, as often as they want, and build a record they can bring to their doctor,” said BeamO Product Manager Livia Robic in the statement. “It doesn’t replace a visit; rather, StethO Sense gives you additional health data to bring to one.”
How eMurmur works
eMurmur is a medical AI company that developed the FDA-cleared eMurmur Heart AI for heart sound analysis. According to Withings’ press release, its algorithm has been validated in peer-reviewed clinical studies across both children and adults.
In seconds, eMurmur can analyze BeamO’s heart sound recordings, taken at one of four positions, to distinguish between no heart murmur, abnormal murmurs and innocent murmurs. It also provides a confidence score for its findings.
How StethoMe works
StethoMe, an AI company specializing in pulmonary sound analysis, offers an age-based protocol, using six lung-recording points for children and eight for adults. Then it gives a Breathing Index score ranging from zero to 100, based on your breathing quality, sounds and rate, as well as your respiratory rhythm and heart rate, to help people detect changes in their breathing patterns.
Note that StethoMe is for general lung sound tracking and isn’t intended for people with a diagnosed respiratory condition, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or bronchitis.
How to use StethO Sense
StethO Sense is located in the Withings app, but a Withings+ premium membership is required to use it. It costs $10 per month or $100 per year.
In the Withings app, you can go to the StethO Sense section and select either a heart or lung recording to have it analyzed, with results delivered in seconds.
StethO Sense was designed to complement the Withings+ Cardio Check-Up service that allows users to submit an ECG recording, which measures your heart’s electrical signals, to a cardiologist for them to review within 24 hours, four times per year.
Use of StethO Sense is unlimited, but note that its results are not diagnoses. All recordings and analyses are exportable and for sharing with a doctor.
A one-month free trial
Starting Oct. 1, those with a Withings+ subscription can use StethO Sense. Existing BeamO users who bought their device before Oct. 1 will get a one-month free trial of Withings+ so they can test out the new feature, as will people who purchase the $250 BeamO starting Oct. 1.
