Wimbledon to take stand against influencers after US Open chaos

Wimbledon does not plan to allow an influx of influencers, in hopes of avoiding the issues that have blighted this year’s US Open.

The All England Club will also confiscate items, such as ring lights, that could be used to disrupt matches.

Flushing Meadows has seen matches interrupted by people taking photographs using bright lighting and making too much noise during points.

Players such as Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka have implored spectators, some of whom might be new to tennis, to follow the sport’s etiquette, while the giant screens around the grounds have been displaying similar messages.

The tournament gave official accreditation to 100 content creators as well as traditional journalists and broadcasters.

The Press Association understands Wimbledon will not have any accreditation category for influencers or content creators, while the club’s conditions of entry prohibit any items that may be used to disrupt matches.

Wimbledon assesses all its policies, including those regarding social media, as part of an annual review.

The US Open is always a raucous event compared to the more refined Wimbledon, with music blaring out from the show courts and spectators regularly leaving their seats during points.

The smell of marijuana around the outside courts, emanating from nearby Corona Park, has also been an issue.

French veteran Adrian Mannarino was the latest player to speak out, telling reporters: “People are allowed to move around in the crowd during points.

“The tournament puts up with it, and I don’t know if it’s the best thing for tennis in general. There’s a smell of marijuana on the court, noise everywhere. The truth is it’s turning into a bit of a zoo.”
