Why the Best Public Art Keeps Disappearing


At the time, it represented a radical vision. For centuries, public art tended to entail monuments, busts and other staid sculptural elements — the goal was usually to celebrate or to commemorate. The Pont Neuf Wrapped, in contrast, was an independently-produced, monumental intervention to the urban landscape that felt more like an event than a sculpture. Four decades later, that’s become the blueprint for public art.
