Who is eligible for the Amex Business Platinum Card?

The Business Platinum Card® from American Express currently features the highest welcome bonus it’s ever offered publicly: Find out your offer and see if you’re eligible for as high as 300,000 bonus points after spending $20,000 on purchases in the first three months of card membership. (Welcome offers vary, and you may not be eligible for an offer.)

Those 300,000 Amex points are worth $6,000, per TPG’s September 2026 valuations, which offer a compelling reason to consider applying.

That’s pretty compelling, but before you start filling out your application, you might wonder if you’re even eligible to take advantage of this offer. This is, after all, a small-business card, so there are different requirements than when you apply for a personal card.

On the other hand, you might qualify for the Amex Business Platinum Card and this fantastic welcome offer without even realizing it.

Here are some ways to determine whether you’re eligible to apply for the Amex Business Platinum card and whether it makes sense to do so.

Who is eligible for the Amex Business Platinum?

You might be eligible for the Amex Business Platinum, including its welcome offer, if you’re a first-time applicant.

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to make seven figures (or even five figures) from your small business each year to have a small-business card. Even if you’re a freelancer, independent contractor or have a side hustle, you can still get approved for the Business Platinum.

That said, the Business Platinum is a premium product, so approval isn’t guaranteed for just any side gig. You may need to provide proof of business income or supporting details, such as a “doing business as” (DBA) name, depending on your application.

You will also likely need a credit score in the good to excellent range to be a serious candidate for the card.

There are other terms and conditions, as well as application rules, to be aware of, though.

Amex Business Platinum application and approval rules

Like many other American Express cards, the Amex Business Platinum has strict eligibility rules for earning its welcome offer — especially for current or former cardmembers.

According to the application terms:

You may not be eligible to receive a welcome offer if you have or have had this Card or previous versions of this Card. You also may not be eligible to receive a welcome offer based on various factors, such as your history with credit card balance transfers, your history as an American Express Card Member, the number of credit cards that you have opened and closed and other factors. If you are not eligible for a welcome offer, we will notify you prior to processing your application so you have the option to withdraw your application.

In other words, you may be disqualified not only for having had the card before, but also if you’ve opened and closed multiple Amex cards or carried out a lot of balance transfers.

Are you eligible for the Amex Business Platinum welcome offer?

To determine your eligibility, think through:

  • Have you had the Amex Business Platinum Card before?
  • Have you opened or closed several Amex cards recently?
  • Do you have a history of balance transfers?
  • Is your credit score good to excellent?

Your answers to those questions will help you determine whether you might be eligible for the Amex Business Platinum and, in particular, this welcome offer.

Amex per-person card limits

In addition to those, keep in mind that American Express typically limits most people to holding a maximum of five Amex credit cards at once — including both personal and business cards.

However, the Business Platinum differs from a traditional credit card in that it has no preset spending limit (meaning the amount you can spend adapts based on factors such as your purchase, payment and credit history). Because this card falls into a separate category, it is likely not subject to Amex’s five-credit-card limit.

Amex also typically limits approvals to two cards within a 90-day period, so if you’ve recently applied for another Amex card, you may need to wait before applying again.

If you already have several Amex cards with high credit limits, the issuer may not be willing to extend any further debt to you, either, since it will factor into how Amex assesses your overall creditworthiness.

Don’t worry about 5/24

Speaking of issuer application restrictions, if you’re eyeing a Chase card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (see rates and fees), you might be worried about Chase’s 5/24 rule.

But there’s good news: Amex business cards don’t count toward that limit. So you can apply for the Amex Business Platinum without affecting your chances of getting a Chase card down the line.

Does it matter if you already have a personal Amex Platinum card?

Not at all. The personal and business versions of the Amex Platinum are considered separate products, so already holding the American Express Platinum Card® won’t disqualify you from applying for the Business Platinum or from earning its welcome offer.

Can you get the card twice?

In some cases, yes, especially if you operate multiple businesses. There are reports of cardmembers being targeted with offers to apply for a second Amex Business Platinum card, each with a different welcome offer.

Amex understands that separate businesses may require separate cards for accounting and expense tracking. So if you run more than one venture or work for multiple companies, you could be prequalified for an additional Business Platinum.

These instances are relatively rare, though. If you do receive one, it’s a good idea to contact Amex directly to confirm your eligibility for the welcome offer before applying.

Checking your eligibility with Amex

Not sure if you’ve had the card before? American Express has a handy “Apply With Confidence” eligibility tool during the application process that lets you know whether you’re eligible for the welcome offer before your application is processed.

This tool lets you see your approval odds before you submit your application, and it uses a soft credit pull rather than a hard inquiry that could affect your score.

What you’ll need to apply for the Amex Business Platinum

To apply for the Amex Business Platinum, you’ll need to provide information such as:

  • Your name
  • Your legal business name and a “doing business as” (DBA) name
  • Business name on the credit card
  • Business address
  • Business phone number
  • Industry type
  • Company structure (sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, etc.)
  • Number of years in business
  • Number of employees
  • Gross annual business revenue
  • Estimated monthly spending
  • Federal tax ID (this could be your own social security number or your business’s employer identification number)
  • Your home address
  • Your personal cellphone number
  • Your social security number
  • Your date of birth
  • Your personal annual income

Before hitting the “Apply” button, make sure you have all this information on hand so that you’re ready to go when the time is right.

What to do if your Amex Business Platinum application is denied

American Express can deny your application for any number of reasons, including if there is missing or inaccurate information, or if the issuer would like more information on your business and income. If your application goes into pending or is outright denied, all might not be lost, though.

Calling the Amex reconsideration line can give you a second shot at approval. By calling them, you can ask if there were specific issues with your application that you can address over the phone or by providing further information.

Be prepared to explain why you’re interested in the card — beyond just the welcome offer — such as specific features or benefits that align with your business needs. You may also need to supply details about your business, including income verification and business address.

If you’re still denied, don’t be discouraged. You may be eligible to apply again in the future, especially if Amex rolls out an elevated welcome offer. Consider it a … platinum lining.
