  • ‘Scary Movie’ opened top at this weekend’s box office.
  • ‘Masters of the Universe’ had to make do with second place.
  • ‘Backrooms’ took a 70% drop.

It might not exactly have the indie cred (or indeed the scare factor) of current horror favorites ‘Backrooms’ and ‘Obsession,’ but the return of spoof franchise ‘Scary Movie’ certainly put the fear into the competition at the box office.

The sixth outing (the first since 2013 and marking the return of the Wayans family) took in $55 million for its first weekend, landing it top of the box office charts.

“Every line will be crossed.”

Release Date: Jun 5, 2026

Run Time: 1 hr 35 min

Budget: $30,000,000

Action/adventure/nostalgia play ‘Masters of the Universe,’ meanwhile, saw a soft opening, managing just $29.3 million for second place. Still, while Amazon MGM Studios will be disappointed it couldn’t match up to the surprise success of ‘Project Hail Mary,’ it’ll see it more as driving rentals/views for when ‘Masters’ hits streaming.

It’s still doing good business given its budget, but ‘Backrooms’ plunged 70%, but has still crossed the mark as A24’s most profitable worldwide release to date.

And ‘Obsession’ was still strong in fourth, adding $25.6 million for a mere 7% fall. And continuing the current trend for YouTube creators finding success with theatrical movies, ‘The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act,’ about characters at the mercy of an unstable ringmaster, landed fifth with $19.4 million.
