Weekend Box Office: ‘Avengers Endgame: Encore’ Rules

‘Avengers Endgame: Encore’ was top of the box office this weekend.
‘Resident Evil’ was pushed to second but held strong.
‘The Heart of the Beast’ was third.

Call it a giant marketing tease for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ all you like, but the new re-release of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ (with ‘Encore’ added to its name) certainly brought the Marvel faithful back to cinemas.

The new(ish) version of the movie, which adds a few scenes (six minutes and 17 seconds’ worth to those keeping count) tied to ‘Doomsday,’ landed top of the domestic charts with $26 million across three days, and an impressive $86 million worldwide. Its total take is now $2.88 billion, meaning it is only $39 million behind 2009’s ‘Avatar,’ which is the biggest worldwide release of all time with $2.9 billion.

That meant last week’s topper, ‘Resident Evil,’ was pushed down to second place, but held strong with $23.3 million.

Brad Pitt-starring survival thriller ‘Heart of the Beast’ landed third with $20 million, while ‘Primetime,’ about Chris Hansen and ‘Dateline,’ made $19.1 million.

Unfortunately, new DreamWorks Animation ‘Forgotten Island’ underperformed, arriving fifth with $12.8 million.
