Week 5 Preview: Los Angeles Rams vs Buffalo Bills

The Los Angeles Rams return home to face Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills in another primetime game on Monday Night Football. The Rams will get a chance to prove themselves against a quality opponent.

Week 5 Preview: Los Angeles Rams vs Buffalo Bills

“I got a ton of respect for Josh, what he brings to their team,” Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford said. “Not only from just making the plays, but I just think his presence out there gives them a ton of confidence, as it should. He’s a fantastic player, has been for a while and he does a great job leading that offense and leading that team. Obviously, I’m going against their defense, but understanding full well that our defense is facing a guy that is as talented as anybody in the NFL at the quarterback position.”

The matchup will showcase two of the NFL’s best quarterbacks – Matthew Stafford and Josh Allen. Stafford and Allen lead two high-powered offenses capable of producing explosive plays and putting up big numbers on the scoreboard.

The key for the Rams in this matchup is limiting Allen and maximizing the offense.

The Rams rank second in passing defense, an area they need to focus on. Allowing just 145.5 yards per game, the Rams defense will face off against the Bills offense averaging 31 points per game. Allen is an unpredictable quarterback who can either take over the game or lose the game. Not knowing which Josh Allen will show up on Monday could work in the Rams’ favor. If the Rams can limit Allen’s spectacular plays, they can win.

“It’s not entirely the same system, and there are different players out on the field,” Allen said on the Rams defense since he last faced Los Angeles. “You can watch it and take a little from it, but really, we’re just trying to look at their last four games and trying to decide what they’re doing. Every game, they’ve been pretty different.”

The Rams offense must also maximize and convert red zone opportunities to touchdowns. Allen is almost certain to put a lot of points on the board. The Rams must capitalize on their red zone opportunities early to ensure a win.

After surviving an injury-filled Week 4, the Rams expect several starters to return this week. Aaron Donald, Jaylen Watson and Colby Parkinson will return mainly reenforcing the defense.

Donald missed Week 4 with a back injury after playing in Week 2 and 3 for the first time this season.

“That’s what the hope is, yes,” Rams head coach Sean McVay said of Donald playing against the Bills on Monday night. “We’ll see. The fact that he’s limited is a good thing, and we’ll kind of just see how he responds. But everything has been progressing in the right direction.”

Watson practiced Thursday while wearing a shoulder harness after dislocating his shoulder in Week 3 and missing Week 4. He wasn’t placed on the IR and is trending toward playing. McVay said Parkinson is progressing in a positive direction after dealing with a shoulder and knee injury in Week 3.

The Last Word

The Rams have a tall task ahead of them this week. The Bills are a Super Bowl contender mainly because of Josh Allen.

The good news for the Rams is that the Bills defense has been terrible this season. Every quarterback who has faced Buffalo has had an amazing game. The Bills allow 372 yards per game, ranking among the bottom three in the league. Their only method of winning games comes from shootouts with opposing offenses.

The Bills will only go as far as Allen can take them. So far, it’s working for them, but after a disappointing loss to the Patriots, Allen will look to get his squad back in the win column.
