Durham 80 for 3 (Armitage 44*) beat Lancashire 79 (Carter 32, Johnson 3-7) by seven wickets

Thunder’s innings began abysmally when Meg Lanning was leg-before to Johnson for a five-ball nought in the first over and that wicket set the tone for a powerplay which ended with the visitors on 21 for 2.

Eve Jones was caught at mid-off for 11 off Heather Graham and the outstanding Johnson deepened Lancashire’s plight when she had Emma Lamb caught behind by Mia Rogers for six and bowled Tilly Kesteven for nought in the space of three balls.

Those wickets left Lancashire on 21 for 4 after seven overs and although Ellie Threlkeld helped Carter add 18 for the fifth wicket, she holed out at long-on off Katherine Fraser for 4 before a proper recovery could be effected.

Fi Morris was then bowled by Mady Villiers for three to leave Lancashire on 43 for 6 in the 13th over. The flimsiest respectability was then supplied by Kate Cross, who put on 32 with Carter but Durham’s spinners took the next three wickets as the visitors subsided from 75 for 6 to 79 all out, leaving Carter unbeaten on 32.

On an evening to remember for Durham’s bowlers, Katie Levick took 2 for 15 and Mady Villiers 2 for 17, both spinners completing their four-over allocation.

Lancashire’s hopes of a miraculous victory were raised when Villiers was brilliantly caught by Lamb off Cross for two in the third over but the visitors’ bowling honours were claimed in impressive fashion by the Weerapulli who had both Emily Windsor (11) and Bess Heath (2) caught by Cross.

But Armitage was not to be denied and Heather Graham was unbeaten on 19 when the facile victory was completed. Durham’s victory finally ends Lancashire’s chances of appearing in Finals Day, although those chances were purely arithmetical before the game began.
